Title: Bush Amnesty Program

1
Bush Amnesty Program
  • International Studies Presentation

2
Starter Stats
  • The law provides 675,000 visas a year for
permanent residence in the United States of
these, 480,000 are availible for the family
members of American citizens and existing legal
residents and another 140,000 are based on
    employment.
  • In addition, refugees can be given permanent
    visas for humanitarian reasons.
  • Poll after poll of Americans have said
consistently, that they want less immigration
legal and illegal, and since legal immigration
lets so few people in, illegal immigration has
    soared.
  • The INS estimates that in January of 2000, there
was 7million illegal immigrants living in the US,
a number that is growing by half a million each
    year.

3
What is Amnesty?
  • Amnesties are all too common legislative efforts
to forgive the breaking of immigration laws and
to make it possible for illegal aliens to live
permanently in the United States. Amnesties
represent a system of federal rewards and
assistance for illegal migrants, and they entice
an even greater number of illegal migrants.
Census 2000 results indicate that 700,000 to
800,000 illegal aliens settle in the U.S. each
year, with an estimated 8-11 million illegal
aliens currently living in the United States

4
Why?
  • Legal work opportunity for immigrants.
  • Corporate America is largely dependant on
    immigrant labor.
  • Economically beneficial
  • Diversity in the work force

5
Why?
  • Our nation needs an immigration system that
serves the American Economy and reflects the
    American dream. (Bush)
  • The temporary worker program I am proposing
today represents the best tradition of our
society, a society that honors the law and
welcomes the newcomer. This plan will help return
order and fairness to our immigration system and
in so doing we will honor our values by showing
our respect for those who work hard and share in
    the ideas of America (Bush).

6
The Pros of President Bushs Amnesty Program
  • Allows for more legal job opportunities for
    immigrants.
  • Gives willing employers the ability to hire
    willing, hardworking employees.
  • Businesses can save money on annual wages.
  • Immigrants now have a better way to provide for
    families back in home country.
  • Immigrants take jobs that no one wants

7
Cons
  • Terrorism and National Security
  • Domestic Crime
  • Bracero Program
  • Economic/Jobs

8
Future Effects
  • Little or no effect on illegal immigration
  • Increase in illegal drug trafficking
  • Less jobs for American Workers
  • Higher American Taxes
  • Social Security and Medicare
  • Increase in Homeland Security
  • Over population in America/ Depopulation of
    Mexico
  • Taking untaxed money over to Mexico.

9
CitizenshipConnections to Unit Four
  • How does this change the make up of our country?
  • Do people feel loyal to a country so diverse?
  • Are people willing to consider themselves
citizens with people who migrated illegally?
  • Illegal immigration causes a hatred between legal
    citizens and illegal citizens.
