Physical Activity Trends
  • Healthy People 2010 goal is to increase daily
physical activity by 30 in adults.
  • As of now 60 of the population is not active
    enough
  • 23- 29 not active during leisure time

Physical Activity Levels of Adolescents and Young
Adults, by Age and Gender
3
Adult Physical Activity
4
Mississippi Health Facts
  • Ranked 49th in Health this year when compared to
    other states
  • We have the highest infant mortality among states
10.5d eaths/1000 live births highest in the
    country
  • 27 above the average state for heart disease
  • Highest Heart Disease Rate 352.5 deaths per
    100,000 population
  • Ranked 45th in all combined risk factors
  • Prevalence of smoking increased from 23.5 tp
    25.3
  • Infectious disease has increased from 27.3 o 35.2
    cases per 100,000 population

5
Diseases associated with Lack of Physical activity
6
Hypokinetic Disease
  • coronary heart disease
  • hypertension
  • hypercholesterolemia
  • cancer
  • obesity
  • musculoskeletal disorders

7
Recommendation for Physical Activity
  • Every U. S. adult should accumulate 30 minutes or
more of moderate-intensity physical activity on
most, preferably all, days of the week

8
Cardiovascular Disease
  • CVD responsible for more than 42 of all deaths
  • 1/6th are under age 65
  • one out of every four Americans have some form of
    CVD

9
Unalterable Risk Factors
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Heredity

10
Alterable Risk Factors
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • High Fat Diet
  • Type-A Personality
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Cholesterol Level
  • Low Levels of Cardiorespiratory Fitness
  • High Blood Pressure

11
Coronary Heart Disease(CHD)
  • CHD accounts for more deaths annually than any
    other disease.
  • Higher in Blacks than in Whites, Hispanics has a
    lower prevelance than Whites.
  • Caused by a lack of blood supply to the heart
    muscle resulting from atherosclerosis.

12
Atherosclerosis
  • A progressive, degenerative disorder.
  • result of a build up of fatty deposits and plaque
in the intima of the coronary artery
  • restricts blood flow to the heart producing
    angina
  • can result in myocardial infarction
  • occlusion of the coronary arteries by 80 or more

13
Hypertension
  • Most common form of CVD
  • A persistent elevation of blood Pressure
  • Normal lt140 systolic / lt90 diastolic
  • Blacks and Hispanics have a greater prevelance
  • up to age 55 men have greater prevelance

14
Hypercholesterolemia
15
Smoking
  • Increases heart rate and blood pressure
  • Inhibits naturally occurring anticoagulants
  • May cause irregular heart beats or arrythmias
  • Increases risk of developing atherosclerosis

16
Diabetes Mellitus
  • 90 - 95 of individuals with Diabetes have type
    II or non-insulin dependent diabetes
  • Usually the result of overeating and
    underexercising
  • Physical activity may reduce the risk of NIDDM
    and attenuate its affects

17
Negative consequences of Obesity
  • Increase Risk for
  • CHD
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke
  • NIDDM
  • High Cholesterol
  • Other Negative Effects
  • several types of cancer
  • osteoarthritis
  • degenerative joint disease
  • menstrual irregularities
  • pyscholgical burdens

18
Risk Classification
  • Health Evaluation
  • detects presence of disease
  • assesses the initial disease risk classification
