Crew Trainer
  • Design Team, Number 1
  • Josh Adams, Eric Aielli, Tony Ham, Austin Nixon,
    Alexander Ruege
  • Dr. Starzyk
  • September 30, 2004

2
Needs Statement
  • Crew coaches have no way of knowing an
    individual rowers current condition and
performance and the location of the boat.

3
Goal Statement
  • Design a system that will allow a coach to
remotely monitor the condition and the
performance of a rower and the position of the
    boat.

4
Project Objectives
  • Monitor the heart rate of each individual rower.
  • Measure the strain exerted by each rower on an
    oar.
  • Track the location of the boat using GPS.
  • Design a system to collect, store, transmit and
    display all above data.

5
Project Constraints
  • Design and build a working system using a budget
    not to exceed 5000.
  • Build a scaled down prototype by end of December,
    2004.
  • Build a full system by May, 2005.

6
Operational Requirements
  • The system shall be used in an eight person crew
    boat.
  • The system shall operate continuously during
    practices and competitions.
  • The strain gauges shall be placed on each oar.
  • The heart rate monitors shall be placed on the
    body of each rower.

7
Technical Performance Requirements
  • The heart rate monitors shall measure and
transmit the heart rate in beats per minute of
eight individual rowers simultaneously to a
location no more than 5 meters away on the boat.
  • The strain gauges shall measure and transmit the
strain in foot-pounds on eight oars to a location
no more than 5 meters away on the boat.
  • Heart rate data and strain gauge data shall be
retransmitted to a location no more than 4 meters
    away off the boat.
  • GPS data shall be transmitted to a location no
    more than 6000 meters away.

Subsystem Performance Requirements (5)
  • The controller shall have a capacity of 64MB in
    memory.
  • The controller shall record for a minimum of 20
    minutes.
  • The controller shall take 30 samples of input per
    minute.
  • The controller shall format the display using one
    line per rower, eight total.

12
Subsystem Performance Requirements (12)
  • Using GPS the system shall measure and display
the location of the boat with centimeter
    accuracy.
  • Using GPS the system shall measure and display
the speed of the boat in meters per second.

House of Quality

Proposed Trade Studies
  • Examine the benefits of on-boat wireless or wired
    transmission system.
  • Examine cost effectiveness and complexity of long
range GPS transmission using repeaters or high
    powered transmitters.
  • Examine trade-offs between cost and time of
system development using high level commercial
products or low level basic components.
