Title: Measures to Influence transport Demand to

1
  • Measures to Influence transport Demand to
  • Achieve Sustainability
  • Project Supported by the
  • Intelligent Energy Europe Programme
  • Contract Number EIE-05-009

2
OBJECTIVE
  • The objective of MIDAS is to encourage transfer
to less energy intense modes of transport by
optimising the use of soft measures such as
information and marketing campaigns, car clubs
    etc.

3
RATIONALE
  • A range of barriers exist which hinder the
successful introduction of soft measures on a
scale sufficient to make a lasting impact on
travel behaviour and energy consumption. These
    include
  • the need for different organisations with
    different objectives to work together
  • lack of awareness amongst stakeholder
organisations and the general public about
    sustainable mobility issues
  • economic and social barriers
  • and the long time frame for urban planning.

4
ACTIVITIES
  • MIDAS addresses these barriers by means of case
studies in 6 cities (Liverpool, Aalborg, Cork,
Clermont Ferrand, Bologna and Suceava) linked to
the overall urban plan in each city.
  • The case studies will be backed up by an
    assessment of their impacts, dissemination
    activities and a training programme.

5
CASE STUDIES ACTIONS
  • Core actions include
  • A review of city land use and mobility plans and
the potential contribution of soft measures.
  • Development and use of innovative consultation
approaches with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Implementation of a range of measures to
encourage the use of walking, cycling and public
    transport

6
EXPECTED RESULTS
  • The main outcomes of MIDAS are expected to be
  • Policy recommendations regarding the use of soft
    measures
  • Assessments of the effect of MIDAS measures on
    public attitudes
  • Reductions in traffic levels, energy consumption
    and pollution
  • Transfer of knowledge and experience to
decision-makers in other cities, particularly in
    New Member States
