I. What is happening?
  • Information Systems Computing support (i.e.,
    hosting of service) is being phased out
  • All links on ISC web pages related to new
    accounts have been removed
  • All KnowledgeBase articles related to new account
    creation have been removed. KB articles related
    to use or configuration still remain
  • ITA will still assist departments with purchasing

II. Why?
  • Consolidation of services OUTLOOK with Exchange
    offers similar calendaring service
  • Low use of current service 1,500 licenses on
    ISC supported hardware/1,350 accounts
    created---45 of these users have never logged
    on an additional 15 have not logged on in over
    6 months
  • Costs Support costs are on a per user basis

III. Important dates
  • Current support contract with Meeting Maker
    expires on March 30, 2003
  • ISC plans to run unsupported through the end of
    the Spring semester 2003 (May 17th-May 18th, 2003)

IV. Who will be affected?
  • Any users on the hosts named-? ais, together,
    gatherI, gatherII, or gatherIII (These are
    actually 3 separate pieces of hardware)
  • Any departments hubbed to ISC servers. These
    include
  • -CNS
  • -University Libraries
  • -Enrollment Services
  • -Research Graduate Studies

  • Already using Exchange for email?
  • -convert to use OUTLOOK/Exchange for calendaring
    as well
  • Using POP server for email?
  • -convert to use OUTLOOK/Exchange for calendaring
    email
  • OR
  • -set up as calendar only user

  • Client choices include
  • -OUTLOOK for all Windows versions (encouraging
    W2K)
  • -Outlook Web Access-web based interface can be
    used by all
  • Client choices include
  • -OUTLOOK under MAC OS9
  • -OUTLOOK under MAC OSX utilizing classic mode
  • -Evolution client for LINUX/Solaris users

  • Another access option
  • -Remote Desktop Protocol/Remote Desktop Connector
    product from Microsoft? In testing currently
    would allow PC and MAC users to run OUTLOOK on a
    server in native mode with all functionality

  • Any department may continue to use Meeting Maker
    at their own discretion
  • ISC will donate hardware currently in use on a
    first come, first serve basis, but all future
    support costs (including hardware maintenance and
    network connection charges) will be
    responsibility of department

VI. Special note about MAC OSX
  • Definitely the wild card in the mix, but
    classic mode implementation offers high level
    of functionality
  • RDP/RDC product targeted mainly at this group
  • Microsoft claims an OUTLOOK client to run
    native under OSX is under development
  • Ximian (developers of Evolution) are also working
    on a MAC client
