Predicate Nouns
  • To locate a predicate noun
  • 1. Locate a linking verb or verb of condition.
  • 2. Find the subject.
  • 3. Look for something that comes after the verb
    that will rename the subject. It will be the
    predicate noun.

  • Example
  • The man is a doctor.
  • (First find the linking verb. It is is. Then
    find the subject. It is man. Finally, look
    after the linking verb. Is there something to
    rename the man? Yes, it is doctor. Doctor is
    the predicate noun.)

Predicate Adjectives
  • To locate a predicate adjective
  • 1. Find a linking verb or verb of condition.
  • 2. Locate the subject.
  • 3. Look for a word that comes after the linking
    verb or verb of condition that describes the
    subject. That is your predicate adjective.

  • Example
  • The skyscraper is tall.
  • (The linking verb is is. The subject is
    skyscraper. After the verb is the word tall.
    It describes the skyscraper therefore, it is
    the predicate adjective.)

Diagramming Compounds
  • Both predicate nouns and predicate adjectives can
    be made compound. This means that there can be
    more than one of them. They are diagrammed with
    a fork doo-hickey!
