- The American education system is one of the
finest in the world, attracting hundreds of
thousands of students from all over the world
each year. There are more than 4000 universities
and colleges throughout the United States, and
each has its own unique application process.
This can make applying for college in the United
States very difficult and confusing.
3- In this WebQuest, you will answer these
questions - How do I decide on a major?
- How do I find the institution that is right for
me? - How do I find out the requirements for admission?
- What is the application process like?

- You will prepare for college applications by
- researching your future career and major
- finding and comparing schools which have your
major - discovering what admission requirements are for
each school - writing required essays

- Throughout this WebQuest you will document your
journey in a - Microsoft Word worksheet.
- 1. How can you know what career is right for you?
- Youll start this quest by discovering what jobs
you are suited for by taking a career aptitude
test. - Career Test

- Record the results of your test in your
worksheet. Be sure to include what careers you
are predicted to be good at, as well as the one
you want to pursue.
6- Now that you know what careers are best for you,
its time to figure out what you should major in.
- Go to one of these sites and match your
interests to majors -

- You might be unsure which job or major you will
pursue. For now, choose one to use for the rest
of this assignment.
7- Next you will write a short essay answering some
questions - about your future job.
- In your essay, be sure to include
- 1. Why you chose the career
- 2. What the work is like
- 3. What kind of salary you can make
- 4. Outlook for the future of this career
- 5. Advantages and disadvantages

- Find 5 schools which offer your major and begin
to compare them.
9- 5. Fill in the chart in your worksheet with the
names of 5 schools that have your major. - What things do you need to compare?
- Visit the website for each school and include
URL, application deadline, tuition for
international students, and TOEFL and other test
requirements, as well as additional features such
as location, size, and ranking. - You decide what additional features are
important to you, and add them to the chart.
10- 6. Most schools require you to submit your scores
on standardized tests such as the TEOFL or
TOEIC, the SAT, the GRE, the GMAT, or others. - Research which tests you will have to take, as
well as when and where they are offered, how much
they cost, and what scores you need to succeed.

essay as part of their application process. Your
next assignment is to research what essay
requirements the 5 schools have, including topic
and length. Fill in the chart with the essay
topics for each school. Then write your essay.

follow those guidelines. -

This WebQuest is intended for intermediate to
advanced level ESL students interested in
attending college in America. It can be assigned
as an individual project with a final oral or
visual presentation, or as a group project with
team collaboration and assessment. This lesson
can incorporate listening skills by being given
in conjunction with a college campus visit or
college fair. Additionally, some universities
will send an admission counselor to your school
as a speaker. If your school has the
resources, the final project option could also
include creating a short instructional video or
website. It meets several Texas TEKS.
