Title: Freshman Physics

1
Freshman Physics
  • Review game and test prep

2
How to take a physics test
  • Dont be nervous!
  • Tell me what you knowyou can explain yourself in
your own words in short answer and essay
    questions
  • Read each multiple choice question carefully and
    consider each answer
  • Choose the best response

3
Answering essay questions and solving problems
  • Read the question!
  • Look for key words in essay questions like
compare and contrast, define, explain, explain,
    etc.
  • Look for what the problem is asking you to solve.
Find/remember equations that help to solve for
    what the problem is asking.
  • Be thorough. Explain yourself well by being
organized. Plan out essay questions before you
begin writing. Be sure to label all answers with
    appropriate units (m/s).
  • Write neatly! Show all work!

4
What is the scientific method?
  • A way of finding the answers we have about the
world around us in a logical wayorganized common
    sense.

5
What are the steps of the scientific method?
  • Recognize a problem
  • Make an educated guess
  • Test and experiment
  • Record data/analyze results
  • Make a simple conclusion

6
Distinguish among theory, hypothesis, and law.
  • A theory is a statement based on hypotheses that
hasnt been proven wrong. (i.e. the theory of
    evolution)
  • A hypothesis is an educated guess
  • A law is a statement of a hypothesis that has
been tested repeatedly and never contradicted.

7
What do we mean when we say that motion is
relative?
  • All things, even those that appear to be at rest,
are moving at 30 km/s relative to the sun. This
happens because earth is moving around an orbit
and so the things on earth are always moving with
    it
  • Motion is relative to the environment. Cars
travel at 60 mi/h relative to the road they are
    traveling on.

8
What is a rate
  • A rate is something divided by time

9
Define speed
  • Speed is distance divided by time (think about
how fast you go in a caryou talk about miles
    (distance) per hour (time))

10
What is velocity?
  • Velocity is speed in a given direction

11
Explain what it means for an object to accelerate.
  • If an object is accelerating, it means that for
every second, the speed and/or direction of that
    object is changing.

12
What is g?
  • G is the acceleration due to gravity. Its value
    is approximately 10 m/s/s
  • To find the instantaneous speed of objects
    falling from rest, vgt

13
How do we calculate the distance of freely
falling objects?
  • We must take into account the objects average
speed. When falling one second from rest, an
object only travels 5 metersthe formula dvt
holds true when v average speed
  • D1/2gt2 is another way to calculate distance for
    objects not falling from rest
