3What is an EMS
?

- A framework for managing the impacts of an
organizations activities, products, and services
on the environment. - A tool to help the Community stay in conformance
with legislated and voluntary environmental
requirements, and to continuously improve its
overall environmental performance. - The Garrison Commanders program,
but everyones involvement.
4Benefits of an EMS
- Sustains mission readiness.
- Ensures employees know and follow procedures,
which will reduce or avoid environmental impacts. - Improves environmental performance, reduces
costs, and enhances compliance with Final
Governing Standards, Army Regulations, and Host
Nation Regulations. - Proactive vs. reactive ? decrease in
environmental risk - Stronger working relationship with community and
regulators improved public image.

- Executive Order 13423, signed by President George
W. Bush, requires all US government organizations
to implement an EMS, (Jan 2007) - DOD Policy, describing EMS requirements (Apr
2002) - DASA (ESOH) Memo, describing EMS requirements
(Aug 2001) - Sustainable range program plan, describing EMS
requirements (Aug 2003)
7ISO 14001
- Army leadership has decided to use the ISO 14001
standard as a model for developing and
implementing an EMS at each installation. - The ISO 14001 provides general guidance for

- Increase the recycling rate.
- Reduce energy consumption.
- Minimize the number of non-fuel efficient,
over-sized vehicles. - USAG Heidelberg military units participate in the
Hazmat Reuse Center program. - Expand the participation in the Lead Acid Battery
Recharging Program.

23Paper Reduction Tips
- Think before you print
- ? Print only the pages you need.
- ? Shorten Documents, where possible.
- ? Set computer defaults to print double-sided.
- 2. Use the back of one-sided copies that you do
not need as scratch paper. - 3. Have trays in your office area to collect and
reuse one-sided paper, envelopes and
file-folders. (Cardboard-boxes are also available
from the Commissary).

Sufficient Daylighting??? Dont Use Room Lighting!
Tip Turn off unused and unneeded lights
Turn off Lights in Rooms that are unoccupied!
25Exterior lights on during daylight hours use the
most expensive energy!

26Use compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of
incandescent bulbs.
Compact fluorescent bulbs use 1/4th the energy of
incandescent bulbs, last 10 times longer, and are
more cost effective.
