Title: VII California update and status

1
VII California update and status
  • Susan Dickey
  • California PATH

2
Applications tested with VII California car
company partners
  • arterial probe
  • map update
  • dynamic signage (incidents, driving time to
    airport and other sites,
  • arterial travel time, arrival time of caltrain,
    etc.)
  • static signage speed limit, POI (restaurants,
    gas stations)
  • v2v video (via remote server)
  • signal countdown and highway connections
    broadcast
  • CICAS-V (traffic signal violation warning)

3
Collaboration with POC VIIC
  • Tolling application at Dumbarton Bridge (VII
    California partners MTC)
  • Hardware/software testing in collaboration with
    Volkswagen research lab
  • Plans for hilly terrain and urban canyon testing
    with portable RSUs

4
Other previous work
  • Early work doing v2v collision avoidance with
802.11b (in-range), GPS and inertial navigation
  • Bus platooning at 2005 World Congress using v2v
    communication over Denso WRM
  • Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control using DSRC
  • CICAS-SLTA in-vehicle left-turn warning enabled
    by intersection sensors (working prototype
    application at RFS smart intersection)

5
Current work
  • Scalability analysis of probe message acquisition
and probe data distribution using simulation
  • Collaboration with probe data project at UCB
    using cellular communications
  • Protocol work for fragmentation and aggregration
at RSU as appropriate to reduce load on backhaul
  • Testing procedures definition and implementation
    for 1609 implementations
  • Radio-agnostic (integrating DSRC, WIFI and
cellular) routing advice and soft safety
applications based on light-weight OBUs with no
    connection to in-vehicle network
  • Transit signal priority work using DSRC
  • Truck platooning using DSRC

6
Lessons learned for 1609
  • No real experience (yet) with 1609, just
proto-11p. Everything weve done could be done
    with PSID21
  • Do we really need to tie PSID to joining a BSS?
Shouldnt rules for joining BSS be geographical,
with local RSUs providing more than one service?
Should service channel be per RSU, not per app
    (at least for RSU apps)?

7
MCNU Testing Status
  • PATH has tested two stationary MCNUs, sending
    messages between two buildings
  • Installing and building our software has
    presented no serious problems
  • MCNU has been tested with Denso WRMs and works in
ahdemo mode unknown if it can be made
    interoperable with new Denso OBE

8
Current issues with MCNUs
  • Security of MCNU on campus network was
compromised, as detected by campus sniffer
    software
  • Performance problem with packets over 400 bytes
has been observed (probably system software
    configuration problem)
