OVERVIEW The Perfect Storm
  • A major crisis in health care services to NM
    citizens
  • 72 of hospitals have curtailed services
  • 38 of home care agencies have refused referrals
  • 15 of long-term care facilities have refused
    admissions
  • Nursing shortage is predicted to more than triple
    by 2010

THE NURSING PARTNERSHIP
  • Partners the College of Nursing (CON), the
    Health Sciences Center Library and Informatics
    Center (HSCLIC), and the Extended University (EU)
  • Mission statewide outreach to a highly diverse
    population including Native Americans, Hispanic
    Americans, African Americans, and White Americans

Partner Descriptions
  • The CON provides the curricular focus, academic
    rigor, and instructional integrity through its
    highly trained faculty of nursing educators
  • The HSCLIC provides course design and faculty
    support through its web design group
  • The EU provides basic infrastructure, web
    training and consultation, and financial
    incentives

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
  • CON is a leader in the U.S. in the delivery of
    nursing programs to rural, culturally diverse
    populations
  • Growth is substantial, with approximately 173
    students enrolled in undergraduate program, and
    136 students enrolled in the graduate strands, a
    total of 309 as of Fall, 2003

Four Degree Options
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Registered Nurse
    (RN to BSN) degree completion
  • Master of Science in Nursing Education
  • Master of Science in Nursing Administration
  • Master of Science in Community Health Nursing

UNM SUPPORT SYSTEMS
  • HSLIC - a one-stop shop in terms of course design
    and development, help desk, and training in the
    use of the universitys web platform, WebCT
  • EU - basic infrastructure, web training and
    consultation, student support, and financial
    incentives. A laptop loaner program is another
    feature

A HANDS-ON APPROACH
  • Extensive statewide network of rural master
    nurses called preceptors to provide on-site
    nursing supervision throughout New Mexico
  • Complimented by UNM-based faculty who visit the
    student nurses on-site at least twice a year

SUMMARY
  • Nursing Partnership is part of the solution to
    alleviating the nursing shortage that faces the
    state of New Mexico
  • The Nursing faculty have re-defined their
    teaching roles to include online instruction
  • We hope that we have helped to alleviate the
    perfect storm that has hit the beleaguered
    citizens of New Mexico
