1
PRODUCTION
SCALE
Production Scale Theory. Knowledge and
Understanding.
2
Production Scale Theory.
The term scale of production is all about the
quantity of products that youre going to
manufacture.
  • There are FOUR main categories-
  • Jobbing/one off Production
  • Batch Production
  • Mass/Flow Production
  • Continuous Production

3
JOBBING PRODUCTION
Examples Your main project, architect designing a
house or a cruise liner, pottery ,art, suits ,
large boats, cruise liner.
4
BATCH PRODUCTION
Examples Bakery, ingredients, inks, paints,
clothes, suits, adhesives
Advantages (better for smaller business who can
not afford mass production.) Faster, cheaper and
generally easier than jobbing production.
Disadvantages Could restrict you to certain goods
and could be difficult to adapt
5
MASS PRODUCTION
Examples Cars, play stations, Xbox, TVs, radios,
mobile phones.
Advantages Large amounts of products, low prices,
improved productivity (24/7) and accurate
products.
Disadvantages Requires fewer workers, expensive
to start up (machines), difficult to alter,
inflexible means all products have to be the same.
6
CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION
7
Production Scale Theory.
  • The type of production chosen depends on the
    market type.
  • If large quantities of the same item is required
    then MASS PRODUCTION is used.
  • If an individual item is required then
    JOBBING/ONE OFF PRODUCTION is used.

Production Scale Theory.
Name and describe THREE methods of production
One Off Production

A one off product, means what is says, one
product is produced, to suit an individual
customers needs.
Quantity
Advantages
The look and function are tailored to suit the
customers needs.
Disadvantages
One off products are usually very expensive and
production is very labour intensive. It takes
time to produce a one off and highly skilled
workers are needed. One off production suits
complex products or luxury items.
Products made
Surf boards, guitars, hand made furniture and
bridges.

Production Scale Theory.
Batch Production
Quantity
In batch production, small quantities of
identical products are produced. The size of a
batch can vary hugely, from twenty to a few
thousand.
Advantages
The machinery used is adaptable and small changes
can be made to the product, from batch to batch,
variations on a theme.

Products made
Batch produced include aircraft, CDs, and books.

Production Scale Theory.
High Volume Production (Mass Produced)
Quantity
Products are manufactured in very large
quantities
Advantages
  • Cheaper than one off or batch produced items as
materials and components are bought in bulk which
    makes them cheaper.

 .
  • Production is often continuous, running 24
hours per day. Mass production suits products for
which there is a high demand and affordable to a
    wide range of people.
  •

Disadvantages
This type of production often uses expensive,
specialised equipment and machinery, including
CAM and industrial robots.
Products made
Mass produced items include cars, fridges,
washing machines and electrical goods.
