  • OpenCola (www.opencola.com) was incorporated in
    1999, is a distributed search engine
  • OpenCola stands for Collaborative Object Lookup

    clever on your computer
  • As you surf the Web, you drag things you find
    (and like) into a folder. From your choices,
    OpenCola learns your interests and crawls the Web
    for related pages, music or games

The "cola" in OpenCola stands for Collaborative
Object Lookup Architecture. Collaborative,
because the software peeks into other people's
OpenCola folders and makes choices for you based
on what others have found useful. If you don't
like what the software finds, you throw it
outand repeat.

  • The Clever has two jobs Finding documents and
    figuring out how to help other clevers
  • Clevers locate other clevers that are spidering
    the same sites as they are, negotiate among
    themselves to appoint a chief spider, which then
    breaks the spidering job up into little pieces.
  • Clevers also data-mine the queries that pass
    through them and play match-maker beetween users
    who have similar interest, passing each users
    research methodologies around to similar users
    and allowing them to learn from one another

  • A user put files of interest an article about
    security holes in router into a folder on their
    desktop. OpenCola folders crawls the network,
    migrating to the desktops of anyone likely to
    have the router information. The software finds
    other files held by those with similar interest
    and suggest those as well for example, someone
    with router-security content might commonly have
    load-balancing content too.

    builds a set of search criteria
  • The LinkRipper pulls the links from the
    documents in your OpenCola folder
  • The Relevance Engine scores the new pages

    pages, Opencola updates your criteria, refining
    your search.
