The Climate Change Bill
  • Statutory targets are welcome but is a 60 cut by
    2050 enough?
  • Need a greater focus on adaptation and more
    frequent reviews on progress
  • Councils will do their part, but 50 of
    Cambridgeshires transport emissions are from
    motorways and trunk roads

LGA Climate Change Commission
  • Key facts
  • in 2004, transport accounted for 28 of UK CO2
    emissions. This figure is projected to rise
  • Carbon dioxide emissions from private cars
    increased 6 1990-2005.
  • projections show traffic growth of 3853 by 2025
  • the poorest households are more likely to walk
    than the richest 36 of journeys against 19,
    and more likely to use a bus, 12 against 4.3

  • All councils should undertake the Energy Saving
    Trusts green fleet programme by end 2008
  • Treasury rules should be changed to allow
    capitalisation of smarter choice measures.
  • CLG/LGA should make sure planning policy on
    reducing the need for car journeys in new housing
    developments is implemented
  • councils should purchase energy-efficient
    vehicles and require low transport emissions from
    suppliers
