Title: Lesson Objective:

1
Lesson Objective
  • To recognise the use of sound in poetry, and
begin to use sound as a stimulus for creative
    writing.

2
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SOUND?
3
NOISE
  • I like noise.
  • The whoop of a boy, the thud of a hoof,
  • The rattle of rain on a galvanised roof,
  • The hubbub of traffic, the roar of a train,
  • The throb of machinery numbing the brain,
  • The rush of the wind, a door on the slam,
  • The switching of wires in an overhead tram,
  • The boom of the thunder, the crash of the waves,
  • The din of a river that races and raves,
  • The crack of a rifle, the clank of a pail,
  • The strident tattoo of a swift-slapping sail-
  • Arises a gamut of soul-stirring joys.
  • I like the noise.

4
THINK AND DISCUSS!
  • What type of sounds are described?
  • Why do you think the poet likes these sounds in
    particular?
  • Can you notice a rhyming pattern? What do we call
    this?
  • What other poetic techniques have been used?
(particularly look for the use of onomatopoeia)
  • Do you think the poet has a message?
  • How successful do you think the poet is?
  • Why is the use of SOUND important in poetry?

5
RESPOND TO THE SOUND!
  • You are now going to hear 9 very different pieces
    of music
  • Write down the first words that come to you when
    you hear the music
  • Be as creative as you like
  • Dont try to express full ideas or sentences
  • Dont edit your responses let it flow!
  • How does the music make you feel?
  • Can you imagine a situation to match the music?
  • Can you describe the music?

How do I turn these ideas in to a poem?
  • Choose the music that provoked the most
    interesting responses.

down. Experiment with the order. Dont feel a
    need to write complete sentences.
  • Try to create a rhythm with the words.
