7
Texture is how something feels. Has
Renoir been successful in creating the illusion
of texture in this painting?
8
How has the artist applied the paint to the
canvas to create the frilly, flowing textures?
Look carefully at his brushstrokes.
9
Renoir has used loose, almost sketchy
brushstrokes. Van Cronenburgh has used a fine
brush and small, detailed touches of paint .
Both artists have painted in oils but can you see
the difference in technique?

The Impressionists
  • The impressionists were a group of artists
working in France in the mid C19th. They
included Monet, Degas, Morisot, Sisley, Pissarro
    and Renoir.
  • They were inspired by scientific discoveries
about how the eye sees colour.
  • They were interested in capturing a fleeting
moment of time in their paintings.
  • They painted in small touches of pure colour
which joined to make the required hue only when
the spectator stood at a certain distance from
    the canvas.
