What is a New Type of Worker in Adult Care
  • Different approaches around the country
  • Staff with new knowledge skills trained at
    NVQ 3 (Health Award)
  • Extending beyond the Care Assistant role
  • Changing the model of work
  • Developing accountability responsibility
  • Closer partnership working with Community Nursing

So whats in it for residents?
  • Residents get the right care at the right time by
    the appropriately skilled worker
  • Residents and relatives receive more detailed
    information which assists in choices
  • No unnecessary moves
  • Good end of life care
  • Prevention of inappropriate hospital admission

What does the training look like?
  • Skin care/ prevention of breakdown
  • Promotion of continence
  • Physiological measurements
  • Competencies collection, testing specimens and
    blood glucose monitoring
  • Minor wound care , treatments and dressings
  • Medication
  • Reflection and development of practice

So isnt this all what Care Assistants should be
doing anyway? SW
  • Well yes but
  • Residents in care homes have increasing
    dependencies
  • We are planning for the future
  • This is about culture change
  • ..and Adult Care is also moving towards
    integration with the PCT.. So it is an example of
    integrated working at the front end

What works well in Bath NE Somerset?
  • Staff are informed and involved in moving to new
    Community Resource Centres which is tangible
  • Partnership with PCT an integrated model with
    an In-Reach Nursing team funded by DH as a
    separate pilot
  • Integrated management model
  • Links with mental health teams

So what doesnt work so well?
  • Some communication issues and some professional
    jealousies!
  • All this is happening whilst we are doing single
    status, restructuring the service and a number of
    other changes
  • Questions are beginning to be asked about pay

So what are the outcomes so far?
  • From Relatives
  • it was such a relief for me that mum could
    stay in her home for her last few days of life
  • a night on a hospital trolley would have been
    a terrible nightmare
  • For Residents early detection of illness
  • Comparing a previous year of acute hospital
    admissions seeing a 50 reduction with the new
    service
