Title: The Intelligent Network Changing the face of telecommunication

1
The Intelligent Network Changing the face of
telecommunication
  • Author Robrock, R.B., II
  • This paper appears in Proceedings of the IEEE
  • Srihari Atluri

2
Abstract
  • Introduction to the network nodes and operating
systems that are the major components of the
    intelligent network.

3
Purpose
  • This paper will help me in understanding the
history and current role of IN in
telecommunications, and how to look at the future
    role of IN.

4
Calling card services
  • TSPS- Traffic service position system
  • When customer dials, the call goes to
TSPS(operator). TSPS launches a query to NCP to
determine how to prompt the customer to enter a
    1digit calling card number
  • TSPS launches a query to BVA to verify the
    calling card number
  • OST functionality is eliminated now a days.

5
LEC Alternate Billing Services
  • ABS is an umbrella title that encompasses calling
card service, collect calling, and bill to third
    number calling.

Private Virtual Networks
  • PVNs make use of the public telephone network,
but by means of the software control, make that
network appear to have the characteristics of a
    private network.
  • A PVN serves a closed user group, and a caller
requires authorization to get on the network.
Thus screening is performed for originating calls

Data and broadband services

Data and broadband services-2
  • The multimedia SCP The Service Control Point
    can provide authorization, address translation,
and carrier identification functions to support
data and broadband services as well as voice
    services

Elements of the Intelligent Networks
  • Service Switching Points (SSP)
  • Signal Transfer Points (STP)
  • Service Control Points (SCP)
  • Service Maintenance System(SMS)
  • DataBaseAdministration System(DBAS)

16
Service Switching Points
  • SSPs are stored program controls that equipped to
    interface with CCS7 signaling network.
  • These switches contain service logic required to
intercept that require special handlingand send
queries to centralized databases in order to
    obtain required call handling information
  • SSPs use triggers such as seizure on line, prefix
digits or address digits to recognize calls for
    special handling by the IN

17
Signal Transfer Point
  • STPs are high-capacity, very reliable packet
switches that transport signal messages between
nodes such as switches and SCPs.
  • STPs perform message routing functions. They
perform a great deal of protocol processing, and
route a high volume of messages through their
    links.

18
The SEAS System
  • Provides operational and administrative support
    for STPs
  • It has the routing information
  • It also acts as a memory administration system
and used to update routing information
  • It collects surveillance data for the purpose of
    network management

19
Service Control Point
  • The SCP is the main engine of the IN
  • It is an online, fault-tolerant, transaction
processing data base which provides call handling
information in response to network quires
  • A new software or some new memory can be added to
the in-service SCP with out disturbing the
    service.

20
Architecture of SCP software
21
Architecture of SCP software-2
  • Service Network Interface consists of the System
7 protocol software MTP, SCCP, and TCAP, or
    equivalent for the X.25 protocol.
  • Support System Interface contains the BX.25
protocol software as well as the link recovery
software for the interface with the Service
    Management System.
  • Maintenance and Operations provides a
    contemporary craftsman interface including colors
    and graphics

22
Architecture of SCP software-3
  • Node administration contains administrative
    tables and measuring data, etc.
  • Node Manager contains faulty recovery and
diagnostic software. It is used to startup,
shutdown and to support growth of the system
  • It is used to detect a problem, and then go
through an escalating sequence of recovery
actions until that problem is cleared
