Human Genome

• The first individual genome ever sequenced -- a
  complete DNA blueprint of celebrity scientist
  Craig Venter -- has revealed genetic variation
  among humans far richer than previously imagined.
  
• Unlike previous versions of the human genome,
  which are comprised of the DNA of many
  individuals, the DNA in this genome belongs to
  just one person.
• Scientists say this genome is the best one
  currently available. And its going to help
  scientists make the connection between genes and
  diseases, health and behavioral traits.

Predictions

• Within five years, faster and cheaper sequencing
  techniques could produce complete genomes for
  10,000 people, laying the foundation for "an era
  of individualized genomics. Craig Venter
• Once we have those, we will basically be able to
  sort out every fundamental question about nature
  versus nurture, what's genetic and what's
  environment. Craig Venter
• He said it would hasten advances in preventative
  medicine.

Findings

• The findings showed that all human beings are,
  genetically speaking, 99.9 percent identical.

• Mr. Venter is the founder and president of the J.
  Craig Venter Institute and the J. Craig Venter
  Science Foundation.
• The J. Craig Venter Institute was founded in
  October of 2006.
