Ancient Egypt

• The Egyptians used a system of picture writing to
  record events. These are called 'hieroglyphics'.
  Each individual hieroglyph represented a sound, a
  letter or an object or person.

MUMMIES

• The ancient Egyptians believed there was a life
  after death. They also believed that in the next
  world the body was needed to feed a person's
  soul. So they tried to preserve the body of a
  dead person in a life-like way. The dry heat of
  Egypt helped to preserve bodies. In addition, the
  Egyptians developed a special technique called
  mummification to preserve the bodies even longer.
  To mummify a body, specialist workers removed the
  liver, lungs and other organs, then dried out the
  rest of the body using a type of salt. The
  mummification process took about 70 days. When
  the body was completely dry, it was carefully
  wrapped in linen bandages and sealed inside a
  coffin. The liver, lungs and internal organs were
  preserved separately, by sealing them in special
  containers called canopic jars.
