Subject Area
Definition
  • ELLS joint activities are developed and
implemented by the Subject Areas which
    concentrate on a thematic subject
  • For each Subject Area a lead university is
    designated with the responsibility of
    coordinating the jointly developed activities
  • At the annual meeting of Board, Task Force and
Subject Areas coordinators an activity plan and
    the achieved progress is reported.

11
Guidelines for Subject Areas
  • Formation process of subject areas is a stepwise
    procedure
  • proposal of a subject area
  • preliminary approval by the Task Force
  • 1 year pilot phase
  • final approval as ELLS subject area

12
Criteria for Subject Areas
  • societal relevance and European dimension
  • educational need important field of knowledge/
  • innovative/interdisciplinary field
  • added value complementing competence,
improvement of education of the ELLS partners
  • participation of at least 3 ELLS universities
  • no extension of study period/ mutual recognition
of ELLS study courses by all ELLS universities
  • operational efficiency

Quality assurance
  • Quality assurance is implemented at all member
    universities
  • The systems and the design of the processes are
    quite different
  • Development of common criteria for evaluation of
    summer schools and master
    courses
  • Development of admission criteria for ELLS MSc
    courses

15
IRO project ELLS framework for joint MSc
programmes
  • The admission regulations, study course
    establishment procedures and legal requirements
are quite different at the ELLS universities
  • IRO compile a comprehensive overview of academic,
legal, administrative and financial issues to
    identify constraints
  • Manual for planning and implementing joint ELLS
    MSc programmes Golden Rules

16
InformationCommunicationTechnology in education
and research
  • Support for Subject Areas in ICT
  • Video conferences for Subject Areas, Task Force
    and Board
  • Overview of available ICT tools advantages and
    disadvantages
  • Solving of technical barriers between partner
    universities
  • Formulate policies on the use of ICT in education
    and research within ELLS
