3Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was a European, born in
Genoa, Italy in the 15th century, 1451. Columbus
sailed with 3 ships from Spain to the Americas
in search of riches and a route to the West
Indies.
4Voyages
Columbus sailed with 3 ships from Spain to the
Americas. The three ships were named the Nina,
Pinta, and Santa Maria. The Santa Maria was the
largest ship of the three, and was the commanding
flagship. Columbus sailed with the flagship,
Santa Maria with 52 men on board. The Nina and
Pinta each had 18 men On board.
5Sailing Routes
Columbus made 4 voyages in all to the
West Indies. His first voyage was in 1492. The
King and queen of Spain financed this voyage.
Columbus landed on one of the Bahama Islands in
the West Indies.
Columbus fourth voyage in 1502 Took him around
the Bahama Islands To South America.

6Juan Ponce de Leon
- Juan Ponce de Leon was a famous explorer from
Spain. His goal was to explore new lands to
claim for Spain and to search for the Fountain of
Youth. - In 1493, he sailed with Christopher Columbus on
his second voyage.
7Sailing Routes
In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon sailed from Puerto
Rico to explore new Lands and riches. After
many weeks of sailing, Ponce de Leons ship
Landed near what is now St. Augustine,
Florida. Ponce de Leon did not find the Fountain
of Youth, but he did claim land In Florida for
Spain. In 1521, he returns to Florida with 200
settlers And plans to build a city. The land
was good for farming.

8Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier was born in Saint Malo, France in
1491. He studied navigation And became a
respected navigator. In 1531, Cartier was
commissioned by the King of France to look for
the Northwest Passage. This was a shorter route
to the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, he was not
successful.

9Christopher Newport
- Christopher Newport was born in 1560. He was an
Englishman who sailed for England to find a
western sea route to Asia, discover gold and
colonize North America.
10Voyages
- Christopher Newport sailed from England to the
new world with 3 ships Susan Constant,
Godspeed, and Discovery.
11Virginia Settlement
- Christopher Newport made several trips back and
forth to the new settlement, bringing with him
new supplies and more settlers. - Christopher Newport died in 1617.
