WHAT IS BULLYING?
  • A form of harassment perpetrated by someone who
    is in someway more powerful, physically or
    socially, than a weaker peer.

Behavior Criteria of Bullying
  • behavior is aggressive, negative purposeful
  • behavior is carried out repeatedly
  • behavior occurs in a relationship where there is
    an imbalance of power between the parties
    involved.

  • 1 out of 5 kids admits to being a bully, or doing
    some Bullying.

School Strategies for Reducing Bullying
  • Make adults aware of the situation involve
    them.
  • Make it clear that bullying is never acceptable.
  • Hold a school conference day devoted to
    bully/victim problems.
  • Increase adult supervision in the yard, halls
    restrooms.
  • Emphasis caring, respect and safety.
  • Emphasis consequences of hurting others.
  • Enforce consistent and immediate consequences for
    aggressive behaviors.
  • Follow-up on instances of aggression.
  • Improve communication among school
    administration, teachers, parents and students.

    problems, concerns and offer suggestions.
  • Teach cooperative learning activities.
  • Help bullies with anger control and the
    development of empathy.
  • Encourage positive peer relations.
  • Offer a variety of extra curricular activities
    which appeal to a range of interests.

Student Ways to Stop Bullying
  • Two is company travel with friends.
  • Stay away from places bullies hang out.
  • Make like a banana and split. It is better to
    avoid a fight by walking away with dignity.
  • Head for a crowded place.
  • Talk to people you trust parents, teachers, and
    friends about how to deal with a bully.
  • Go ahead and make my day! Practice acting
    confident how you will talk and act the next
    time someone bothers you.

  • Try ignoring the bully. If the person continues
    to bother you, say firmly Cut it out!
  • Participate in activities where you are likely to
    excel. Focus on what you do well.
  • Socialize with other students and try to make
    friends. Mix in rather than be left out.
