Title: The Benefits Of Specifying Microdrop High Pressure Water Mist

1
The Benefits Of Specifying Microdrop High
Pressure Water Mist
2
Water Mist A Definition
Water mist is defined as a water spray for which
the 99 of the flow-weighted cumulative
volumetric distribution of water droplets,
Dv0.99, is less than 1000 microns. This Value is
found at the minimum design operating pressure
and is measured in a plane 1M from the nozzle.
3
Droplet Size Significance
  • Greater Surface Area
  • Evaporate Quickly
  • Remain Airborne Longer
  • As a consequence
  • Enhanced Performance
  • Attenuate Radiant Heat
  • Improved Smoke Scrubbing
  • Smaller Footprint

4
The Intelligent Use of Water
  • 335kJ to heat 1 litre from 20oC to 100oC
  • 2257kJ to convert 1 litre to steam
  • 16201 volumetric expansion

MicroDrop Heat Absorption Capacity Is Higher Than
Any Gaseous Suppression System Agent
5
Extinguishing Mechanism
6
Fire Test Plastic Waste
Highly Effective Cooling
  • Controls the fire
  • Reduces radiant heat

Oxygen Displacement
  • Steam generation aids extinguishing
  • Characteristic is unique to HPWM

7
Safe for People SNAP Listed
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency A Medical
Health Panel evaluated water mist under the
Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP). The
panel concluded that water mist using potable
water is benign to nature and does not present a
toxicological or physiological hazard to human
beings and is thus safe for use in occupied
areas.
8
Key Advantages
  • Low Water Usage
  • Minimises Consequential Damage
  • Reduces Waste Water Volume Bund Size
  • Less Intrusive Installation
  • Small Bore Stainless Steel Tube
  • Light Weight
  • Reduced Installation Time
  • High Radiant Heat Attenuation
  • Controls Fire Spread
  • Reduces Damage

9
Performance The Criteria
  • Fire Control
  • The limitation of the growth of a fire by pre
    wetting adjacent combustibles and
    controlling ceiling gas temperatures to
    prevent structural damage.
  • Fire Suppression
  • The sharp reduction of the rate of heat release
of a fire and the prevention of fire re-growth.
  • Fire Extinguishment
  • The complete suppression of a fire until there
    are no burning combustibles.

10
Fire Control Suppression Control Examples
  • Typical Class A Fires
  • Ordinary combustibles
  • Deep seated
  • Highly shielded fires - i.e. in cabinets
  • Low heat release

11
Fire Extinguishment Examples
  • Typical Class B Fires
  • Flammable liquids
  • Pool fires
  • Spray fires
  • High heat Release fires - plastics

Why Choose TYCO
  • We are the worlds largest fire protection system
    specialist
  • Comprehensive technical and financial resources
  • Long term commitment to MicroDrop HPWM
  • Directly involved in development of mist
    technology since 1878
  • Efficiencies in the MicroDrop product and
engineering expertise minimise the physical and
    environmental footprint
  • MicroDrop minimises heat and smoke damage to
    safeguard both life and property

25
Environmental issues
  • MicroDrop systems use only naturally occurring
gaseous and hydraulic media e.g.. Water, Nitrogen
  • MicroDrop minimises the environmental impact and
    damage of fire.
  • Efficient use of water drastically reduces fire
    effluent run off.
  • MicroDrop efficiencies reduce the quantities of
water and power needed for effective fire
    protection.
  • Mist technology significantly reduces the use of
extracted and processed earth resources i.e.
    piping and water.
  • Strategic location of regional offices
significantly reduces travel miles for both
    products and installation teams

26
TYCO is the only company whose knowledge and
understanding of watermist technology can be
traced back to 1890s
  • 1890s Parmelee perforated nozzle
  • 1920s French Navy oil burner nozzle
  • 1950s Rockwood Fog lance- marine
  • 1990s Imo cruise ship developments
