  mechanisms for a dry, hard-soiled region.

Organizational activities.

• Promotion of appropriate agricultural/rural

  activity based womens cooperatives leading to
  much broader empowerment oriented activities,
• ashram shalas hostels school for rural
  education. Note - These are funded by CAPART
  other government/semi-government/small donor
  agencies to the extent of supporting basic
  models. AID may keep in mind some support for
  expansion in 02-03

Why should we support them?

• Operates in saline, hard-soiled region without
  cultivable land and drinking water.
• Has successfully demonstrated the development
  path based on grass-root participation and
  appropriate technology
• a bulwark of opposition to the ugly development
  pattern that snatch traditional ways and means of
  livelihood away from communities marginalizing
  them even farther.

• Expertise in participatory rural development

  cooperatives

• - mass movement to stop forcible land
  acquisition eviction of 43 villages for
  Special Economic Zone
• Committed indigenous leadership
• - As a self-starter Prof. Ker worked his way
  as a mill-worker to become the first to attain
  higher education among the local Vagher
  community.

• - established a district level committee of
  NGOs to coordinate post-Earthquake rehabilitation
