Title: Phonics at Fleetville

1
Phonics at Fleetville
  • Reception

2
Jolly Phonics
  • The Jolly Phonics Programme is a systematic
    approach to teaching phonics
  • It identifies 42 sounds in the English language
which are used when spelling the majority of
    words.
  • There are 24 single phonemes (sounds) and 18
diagraphs (2 letters that represent 1 sound)

3
Letter Sounds / Phonemes
  • Each of the 42 phonemes have an associated sound,
    action and grapheme
  • The children will learn all 42 phonemes over a 14
wk period, at a rate of 3 phonemes per week.
  • They will be introduced to the letter sound in
class, listening for the sound as it appears in
words, making the action associated with the
sound practising forming the letter shape,
firstly by moving their finger in the air (air
writing) then completing the jolly phonics
sheet associated with each letter sound.

4
How will it be taught ?
  • Jolly Phonics will be taught as a discreet 15
minute daily whole class phonics session in light
of the recent Rose Review its research on
    early reading.
  • The children have started the Jolly Phonics
programme in school this week and have already
    covered the first 3 phonemes.

5
5 Basic Skills
  • 5 basic skills have been identified in the Jolly
Phonics programme as essential to developing your
childs phonic knowledge their skills as an
    early reader
  • These are
  • 1) Learning the letter sounds
  • 2) Letter formation
  • 3)Blending
  • 4) Identifying sounds in words
  • 5) Tricky words

6
How can I support my child at home?
  • Your child will bring all their Jolly Phonics
material home in an A5 zip wallet
  • These should be kept in your childs book bag at
all times and brought into school everyday
  • Initially zip wallets will contain a letter
sounds book a JP booklet of actions
  • These will be added to each week as your child is
introduced to the next 3 phonemes
  • Please look at these with your child, say the
sound, make the action, practise forming the
letter in the air or on paper and thinking of
    words beginning with these sounds

7
  • As your child becomes more confident at
identifying the first two sets of phonemes they
will begin to learn to blend these sounds
together to say and read simple words eg.
  • sat it pat tap pan nip

8
Wordboxes
  • Wordboxes are a set of 10 words in an envelope
    (wordbox 1 18a)
  • These words can be blended together to read or
    spell using phonic knowledge
  • Wordboxes will be introduced during phonics
sessions in class, where children will be
encouraged to blend the letters they see to read
    /or spell a word
  • Wordboxes will also be sent home to work on with
    you

9
Using wordboxes at home
  • When your child brings their first word box home
they will also have a wordbox book in their A5
    zip wallet
  • At first your child will have the wordbox for a
whole week (as they become more competent this
may increase to 2 wordboxes per week)
  • Please spend the first few days just looking at
the words in turn, encouraging your child to say
the sounds they see make the actions if
necessary. Then encourage them to begin to blend
the sounds they see together to say a word
  • By the end of the week your child should be
becoming more competent at blending the sounds
and saying the words, now try saying the words to
your child and letting them write the sounds they
can hear in their wordbox book
  • Encourage them to think about all the sounds they
can hear in a word and write them in the correct
    order
  • This is not a spelling test there is no
expectation that your child will spell every word
correctly, instead it should be an attempt at
writing words by applying what they know about
letters words by using their knowledge of
    phonics !

10
What happens next ?
  • In school we will look in your childs wordbox
book to check the progress they are making,
    before introducing the next wordbox
  • At home your child will continue to practise all
their phonemes using their letter sounds book
actions booklet, as well as practising their
skills of blending to read spell simple
    phonetic words
  • We will also put a letter formation practise book
in the A5 zip wallet. We will write the letter
they are to practise at the top of the page,
please encourage them to do this at home,
practising first in the air, then writing into
their books. Please encourage the correct letter
    formation (see the accompanying sheet)

11
Tricky Words
  • Tricky words will be introduced when your child
is confidently building up a good knowledge of
the letter sounds, actions graphemes and is
making good attempts at blending to read spell
    words.
  • The Jolly Phonics programme identifies 60 Tricky
Words which are commonly used. These words are
tricky because they are not spelt as they
sound, nor do they use the common diagraph
spelling patterns. Instead they require the
reader to recognise them by sight in order to be
read, or the speller to have remembered the
letters their correct order in order to write
    them.
  • Tricky words will be introduced in class the
first 10 will be sent home in the A5 zip wallet
in a little tricky word bag.

12
  • Tricky words will then be introduced at a rate of
3 per week and added to the tricky word bag.
  • These will continue alongside the letter sounds
book, action booklet, letter writing wordboxes.
  • Please help your child to learn to sight read
these tricky words, and when ready try to write
them using the correct spelling in their wordbox
    book.

13
Library Books
  • You are probably all thinking what about reading
books ? when will my child get one?
  • Sharing books together is an invaluable way of
fostering a love of reading in encouraging your
child to want to know how to read themselves.
Please continue to read stories to your child at
    home everyday.
  • Library sessions will take place in school
everyday, your child will have their turn when it
    is their show tell day
  • Library books are books chosen by your child from
    our school library
  • They will choose 1 book each week to bring home
to share with you, please read it to them, write
any relevant comments in their blue home/school
book and return it on the correct day. If a
library book is not returned your child will not
be able to choose another one and will have to
wait until the following week to return it
select another, so please do help them to
    remember the correct day.

14
Reading Books
  • The first reading books your child brings home
    will be ORT picture books.
  • They dont have any words !
  • Instead they are picture books which tell a
simple story using familiar characters (the
children will be introduced to the characters in
    school first)
  • Please share these books at home, talk about the
pictures what is happening, encourage your
child to build up a sequence of events and
eventually to tell you the story. Please use the
accompanying parent cards to help you to extend
    their vocabulary develop comprehension skills
    by asking the suggested questions

15
  • Reading books with words will be introduced once
your child has a good knowledge of the single
phonemes, is able to blend sounds successfully to
read simple words can read the first set of
    tricky words.
  • Reading books come from a variety of published
reading schemes and are graded according to an
approved system widely used in schools.

16
Reading in YR
  • The aim is for all children to be heard read
    twice per week.
  • 1 with the class teacher / practitioner
  • 1 with a PRA
  • Reading in school may take the form of
practising phonemes using Jolly Phonics cards /
pictures / actions, working through their sounds
book, action booklet, practising blending /or
writing wordbox words reading scheme books
  • When your child does any reading activity in
school 11 with an adult it will be recorded in
    their blue home/school book

17
Blue Home/School Books
  • Please keep this book in your childs bookbag
along with all JP work their scheme reading
book, at all times. Then it will always be
available should your child have the opportunity
    to read in school
  • Please make a record of any reading work your
child has completed at home (eg. JP practise,
wordbox work, tricky words reading books)
  • Please include the date, title of book, any
    relevant comments and your signature.

18
There is a lot to remember !
  • But we will keep you informed during each stage
of the phonics programme to enable you to help
    your child at home
  • Keep it fun we will be keeping it fun in school
by playing lots of phonic games, using the IWB,
    etc
  • If your child is tired dont push them, they
will learn far more when they choose to do it
rather than if they are made to do it !
  • Little and often is best. A little bit of
practise each day is better than saving it all up
for a Thursday night! They will be practising
little often in school during their daily 15min
phonics session dont do anymore than this at
    home!
