Definition of Color

• Color is the visual quality of objects created by
  the amount of light they reflect or absorb.
• A green object, for example, absorbs all colors
  except green.
• The green you see is the part of light that is
  reflected back to your eyes.
• Sir Isaac Newton was the first to understand how
  color works.

Hues

• Colors are also called hues.
• They are classified as primary, secondary, or
  intermediate.

Primary Colors

• The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue.
• These colors cannot be made by mixing other
  colors together.
• But, these colors, along with black and white can
  be mixed together to create any other color you
  can imagine!

Secondary Colors

• The secondary colors are orange, violet, and
  green.
• They are called secondary because they are made
  by mixing two primary colors.
• For example, yellow and red make orange, yellow
  and blue make green, and red and blue make violet.

Intermediate Colors

• Intermediate colors are made by mixing a primary
  color and a secondary color that are next to each
  other on the color wheel.

Warm Colors

• You can also classify colors into groups of warm
  or cool colors.
• Warm colors are reds, yellows, and oranges.
• Warm colors make a piece of art have a bright,
  happy, energetic mood.

Cool Colors

• Cool colors are greens, blues, and violets.
• Cool colors give off a mood of peace and calm but
  also of fear and loneliness.

• A color scheme is a plan for using color in an
  artwork.
• Planning a color scheme ahead helps the artist
  achieve the effects he or she wishes to create.

Monochromatic Color Scheme

• A monochromatic color scheme uses different
  values of the same hue.
• This kind of color scheme creates a sense of
  unity or wholeness.

ANALOGOUS COLOR SCHEME

• Analogous color schemes use colors that are side
  by side in the color wheel and share a hue.

COMPLEMENTARY COLOR SCHEME

• A complementary color scheme uses colors that are
  across from each other on the color wheel.

Neutral Color Scheme

• A neutral color scheme includes black, white, and
  values of grey.
• Brown is also considered neutral by many artists.
