HOLISTIC MENTAL HEALTH
2
Human Health Comprises 5 Dimensions
  • Physical
  • Social
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual

3
Mental Health
  • Describes the dimensions other than physical
    health
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Spiritual

4
Mental Health
  • Also known as the psychological, reasoning or
    intellectual dimension.
  • Realistic acceptance of lifes circumstances and
the utilization of choices and options available
are characteristics of positive mental health.

5
Social Health
  • Most individuals thrive in the presence of a
    supporting, loving, and accepting social
    environment.
  • On the other hand, some of the most severe forms
of unhappiness result from difficulties involving
    human interaction.
  • Socially healthy people are more harmonious in
their dealings with others, and demonstrate
helpfulness and cooperation. Skills in handling
disagreements and managing conflicts are earmarks
    of the socially healthy.

6
Emotional Health
  • Emotions are both easy and difficult to
    understand.
  • Many people have difficulty controlling their
emotions or understanding the cause or impact of
    these emotions.
  • The key issue is to recognize that humans are
subjected to emotional responses and that these
can be positive as well as negative.
  • The emotionally healthy person is able to
recognize a feeling response in him/herself as
well as in others and then analy7ze whether it is
    a productive or non-productive reaction.

7
Spiritual Health
  • Throughout history, most societies have held to
some sort of belief system that involves
    something beyond themselves.
  • Human history is filled with examples of people
being discriminated against and at times even
harmed because of their particular method of
expressing or acting out their spirituality.
  • Spiritually healthy individuals are able to hold
firmly to a belief system, have faith in and gain
strength from a belief in something beyond
themselves, yet, do not feel the need to
belittle, demean, or interfere with the spiritual
    focus of others.
