Student Portfolio Log
  • Using Microsoft Excel
  • Mrs. Jill Fisler

Lets begin
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Log on.
  • Double click the Microsoft Excel icon.

Saving your work
  • For now, save your work in the My Documents
    folder on the computer.
  • Go to File, Save As
  • Type your first name, then ISPL.
  • Click Save.
  • Save every 3-5 minutes.

Making the Fields
  • Click column A, row 1 and type PROMPT TITLE.
  • Click on any cell then
  • Click column B, row 1 and type TYPE OF WRITING.
  • Click on any cell then

  • Click column C, row 1 and type HOLISTIC SCORE.
  • Click on any cell then
  • Click column E, row 1 and type DATE COMPLETED.
  • The cursor will change to a plus sign with
    arrows.

CHANGING COLUMN WIDTHS
  • As you can see, the field names do not fit in the
    cells.
  • We need to make them larger.
  • Click the blank space above the number 1.
  • Every cell should be highlighted.
  • Place the cursor on the line between cells A and
    B.

  • The cursor will change to a plus sign with
    arrows.
  • Click the cursor at this point and it will say
    Width 8.29(63 pixels).
  • Move the cursor to your right until the size
    shows Width 34.00(243 pixels).
  • You are doing GREAT!!

CHANGING ROW HEIGHTS
  • Move the cursor between the 1 and the 2 along the
    side rows.
  • Click the cursor and it should read
    Height11.25(15 pixels).
  • We need to change that to Height 45.00(60
    pixels).

WORKING WITH TITLES
  • Highlight columns A,B,C, and D by clicking A1 and
    sliding to your right.
  • Change the font size to 14.
  • Change the font to Comic Sans MS.
  • Now click the CENTER alignment button on the tool
    bar to center the titles in their cells.
  • Click on any cell.

WORKING WITH TITLES
  • Columns C and D are too large for the information
    it will store, so lets make them smaller.
  • Place your cursor between C and D.
  • Move the cursor to your left to reduce the size
    of the cell.
  • You want Width 16.00(117 pixels).

  • Place your cursor between D and E.
  • Move the cursor to your left to reduce the size
    of the cell.
  • You want Width 17.43(127 pixels).

  • Columns C and D are too large for the information
    it will store, so lets Word Wrap the
    information.
  • Go to FORMAT, CELLS, ALIGNMENT.
  • Find Text control, click Wrap Text.

LABELING
  • Under the Type of Writing column you will label
    as follows
  • B2 label Picture Prompt (Fall Sample)
  • B3 label Narrative
  • B4 label Descriptive
  • B5 label Expository
  • B6 label Persuasive
  • B7 label Picture Prompt (Spring Sample)

LABELING
  • Highlight B2-B7 and change the font to 12 and
    Wrap Text.
  • Go to FORMAT, CELLS, ALIGNMENT.
  • Find Text control, click Wrap Text.

HEADERS AND FOOTERS
  • Go to View and click Header and Footer.
  • Click Custom Header.
  • In the Left section type Your full name, and
    Grade 7.
  • Click the Center section type INDIVIDUAL
    PORTFOLIO STUDENT LOG.
  • Click the Right section type 2004-2005 and Mrs.
    Fisler.

GRIDLINES
  • Click the worksheet.
  • On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then
    click the Sheet tab.
  • Select Gridlines check box.
  • Click Print.

The TEST
  • When you are sure that you saved correctly, close
    all programs.
  • Go to My Computer and double click.
  • Find 3 ½ floppy and double click.
  • Find the portfolio you just created and double
    click.
  • You will receive an A if your portfolio is
    PERFECTLY created on the screen.

Saving to your disk
  • Insert floppy.
  • Go to File, Save As
  • Pull down arrow key and make sure you are now
    saving to your 3 ½ floppy.
  • Name the file your name then type the word
    portfolio.
  • Click SAVE.
