Abstract
  • As a part of an independent study, I researched
    students vocabulary retention using digital
video clips to practice and introduce new words.
  • I also compared the results of teacher-led
instruction to peer instruction of vocabulary.

4
Rationale and Research
The intent of the study was to investigate the
effects of peer instruction on vocabulary
learning as opposed to teacher-led instruction.
I am currently conducting another study about the
use of digital video clips for teaching
vocabulary.
5
Procedure- week 1
  • First, I pretested students knowledge of Ar
verbs in Spanish and my target verbs for the
    week.
  • Next, I introduced target verb vocabulary to
students using a power-point presentation with
digital video clips that I created.
  • Over the course of a week, students played
several games and completed cloze passages to
    practice vocabulary.
  • At the end of the week, I assessed students
knowledge of the same vocabulary that I
    pre-tested.

6
Procedure- week 2
  • Again, I pretested students knowledge of ar
verbs and a new set of verb vocabulary.
  • Students created groups, looked up this weeks
vocabulary and planned video clips to represent
    one verb for each group.
  • Over the course of 2 class periods, students
video-taped their clips and created power-point
presentations. These were then shared with the
    class.
  • Students used similar game and cloze passage
activities for practice of target vocabulary.
  • At the end of the week I reassessed students
knowledge of ar verbs and target vocabulary.

Some limitations and Concerns
  • This activity requires a fairly technology savvy
teacher and equipment including a digital camera,
    power-point program and projection device.
  • A relatively long period of time is required to
complete the project, so it would be wise to
choose important or frequently used vocabulary.
  • This activity lends itself to verb vocabulary due
to the nature of the video clips.
  • A positive addition would be to take the
vocabulary from the context of some literature
    being used in the classroom.
