Fractures
  • Occurs when bone is subjected to forces, which
are strong enough to disrupt its structural
    integrity.

5
COMMON CAUSE OF FRACTURE
  • Accident/injury Motor vehicle accidents (MVA)
and falls are the leading cause of fracture.
  • Aging- Bones weaken as we age..
  • Disease and pathologic fractures- Diseases weaken
bone by eroding the bone structure away until the
    weakened bone snaps.
  • Bone fatigue- A condition that may occur even in
healthy bones that are subjected to prolonged,
    excess stress.

6
Closed or Simple Fracture
  • A fracture that completely severs the bone, but
    does not break the skin.

7
Open or Compound Fractures
  • The broken bone breaks through the surrounding
    tissue and the skin

8
Comminuted Fracture
  • A fracture that shatters the affected bone into
    many fragments.

Springer Spaniel
10
Greenstick Fracture
  • A partial fracture in which one side of the bone
is broken while the other side is bent.

12
Compression Fracture
  • Usually occur in the vertebrae and are a result
of extreme stress which pushes the vertebrae
    together.

13
Stress Fracture
  • Microscopic fractures in a bone resulting from
    repeated stresses.

14
Colles Fracture
  • A break in the distal portion of the radius
usually caused by falling with your arm
    outstretched.

fracture of the radius at impact

15
Epiphyseal Fracture
  • A fracture between the epiphysis and the
epiphyseal plate of a growing bone.

16
Impacted
  • The broken ends of the bones are driven into
    another bone
