2ACADEMICS
3Academics
- We held cluster meetings with other Diocesan
schools to ensure the successful implement of the
new curriculum from the Diocese. - We thoroughly analyzed the standardize test ITBS
(Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) results and reviewed
them with each teacher to make adjustments to
instruction. - Our students in 1st through 5th grades used the
new math and religion series we purchased. - Our school placed 2nd in our Diocese and 8th in
State for PSIA (Private Schools Interscholastic
Association) competition. - We had our 2nd graduating class from our school
with most of the students continuing onto
Catholic high schools.

- We conducted benchmark math testing to assess
individual student and class performance. - This information is used for the assessment of
instruction and placement of students. - We worked with parents to coordinate services
from our Language Therapist for students
identified for the program. - Our kindergarten class participated in a study
with Southern Methodist University. - The purpose of this program was to ensure that
students in the early primary grades, who may
struggle with math, are identified and given
strategies to become successful. - This is a three year program and is closely
monitored by SMU.

- Add Saxon Phonics to our curriculum for
Kindergarten through 2nd grade. - This program will help our primary grade students
develop in phonics, reading and spelling. - This program has been purchased with funds raised
at the Auction. - This state-of-the-art program is used widely
across the Diocese - Develop benchmark instruments to assess skill
levels in language arts, especially in writing
and grammar. - Implement new writing program, The Six Traits of
Writing, for 3rd - 8th grade. - Staff members will attend a three day training
session this summer for this specific program. - Hold an orientation week for 5th graders to help
ease the transition to middle school.

- Continue to work with Catholic High Schools to
assess the readiness of our graduates, evaluate
programs, and ensure proper preparation in all
curricular areas. - Offer Study Skills and Organizational Skills

- We expanded our Prayer Buddy Program to include
the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th grades. - Our students celebrated the Month of the Rosary
with weekly school-wide rosaries. - Our students participated in a large number of
community outreach programs - Collected money in rice boxes for people living
in extreme poverty around the world. - Made sandwiches and collected socks for a local
womens shelter. - Collected money in Baby Banks to help mothers and
their babies in need. - Raised money to build schools by collecting
pennies and other change for Pennies for Peace. - NJHS collected 205 jackets and 98 blankets for
the St. Vincent de Paul Society to distribute to
the needy. - Feed the Cow for the local food bank.
- Raised funds for Honor Flight program to send
WWII vets to Washington DC to visit the WWII
memorial.

- We established an Anti-Bullying Program. This
included - Classroom guidance by our counselor
- Guest speakers
- JPII Peer Assistance Leaders visited all grades
- Anti-Bullying Banner signed by entire student
body - We implemented the Random Act of Kindness Award.
- Awarded to a student caught in the act of doing
something kind for others. Those students names
were announced on Fridays during the regular
announcements and then recognized with a
certificate at the end of the year awards
ceremony.

- We celebrated Red Ribbon week. The purpose of
this week is to provide education for students to
the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse. - Every student received a red ribbon to wear for
the week and lower grades received stickers,
buttons and/or pencils. - Teachers planned special activities in their
classrooms to promote healthy living. - We helped ease the transition for new students.
- All new students attended a donuts breakfast with
our school counselor and a lunch meeting at the
beginning of the year. - Students were given ice-breaker activities to
encourage new friendships with other newcomers
and other students who were new in previous
years.

- We celebrated Catholic Schools Weeks with a large
number of activities. - We wished our founding pastor of our school,
Msgr. Don, farewell. - We presented him with a leather-bound book filled
with a thank you note from each of our students
at his last student Mass. - We thanked him for his love, dedication and
constant encouragement of our school at a school
and parish reception.

- Send a monthly newsletter to parents called
Counselors Corner. - Add Counselors Corner to our Website.
- Start a Peer Assistance Leadership (PALS) program
at our school. - Establish a Virtue of the Month with activities
for all grade levels. - Hold an anti-bullying assembly for all grades.
- Welcome our new Pastor, Bishop Doug Deshotel.

- We started a technology committee comprised of
parents with expertise in a variety of areas. - The committee combined the school and parish onto
one network and saved over 500 a month by using
one service provider. - We are saving thousands of dollars by utilizing
the expertise of our parents. - We upgraded all 113 computers to Microsoft 2007.
- We redesigned the parish website to help in
promotion of our school. - We implemented the accounting portion of RenWeb.
- added the ability to pay bills online.

- We transitioned from weekly updates in the Friday
Folders to weekly eBlasts to reach our goal of
paperless communication. - The re-enrollment process was streamlined with
the use of ParentsWeb for online re-enrollment. - The Parent Alert system was used to notify
parents of school closing due to bad weather. - We were able to reach parents through email, cell
phones and text messaging. - The teachers utilized the new DLP projectors to
enhance their daily instruction. - The teachers integrated the use of technology
into their lesson plans.

- Purchase Smart Pads and Document Cameras this
summer with funds raised at the Auction. - This new technology gives the teachers the tools
to interact with the images on the screen. - Utilize the medical component of RenWeb.
- This will improve communication between our
clinic and parents - A permanent record of all clinic visits will be
accessible via ParentsWeb. - Teachers will have easy access to medical
information and important allergy information - Standardize the posting of homework, long-term
projects and tests on RenWeb. - Standardize the communication of information from
teachers to parents. - All within ParentsWeb (no outside websites).

- Last summer, we renovated our gym and replaced
floor. - Raised 140,000 to pay for the entire renovation
and replacement of floor. - Sources Auction, Carnival and One Square Foot at
a Time campaign - We reorganized the storage rooms and built locker
rooms for the middle school students. - We purchased additional bookshelves in library.
- Purchased a scoreboard for field (this summer)
- Money raised from concessions by the Booster Club
and from a few donations will pay for the
scoreboard.

- Purchase an outside storage unit for field.
- Add alarm to outside doors to alert personnel if
someone leaves the school area. - This alarm has been added this summer.

- We launched our Financial Aid program.
- We were able to award aid to 16 families for the
upcoming school year. - A percentage of funds raised at the Auction will
be used each year to fund this program. - The funds raised at this years auction will be
used for improvement to the Science Lab and the
Saxon Phonics program.

- Our Varsity Baseball team won the Dallas
Parochial League championship. - Our 7th grade girls volleyball team won the
Dallas Parochial League championship. - Both 5th grade boys and girls basketball teams
made the Dallas Parochial League championship
games. - Our booster club raised over 8000 to be used to
purchase the scoreboard. - We fielded our first football teams for our
school, both at Varsity and Junior Varsity
levels.

- We hosted our home DPL games for volleyball and
basketball due to gym renovation. - Our annual Sports Banquet continues to recognize
the accomplishments of our athletes.

- We created a professional video to increase
awareness and enrollment for our school. - Video is on our home page (www.stjosephccschool.ne
t) - We advertised in local magazines and The Texas
Catholic. - Mr. Riley, Mrs. Premo and Mrs. Story received
Work of Heart awards from the Catholic
Foundation. - We received a lot of press from the local media.
- The Diocese used our school for a photo shoot for
their general campaign.

- Start a public relations committee to help create
even more awareness of our school. - Identify other advertising venues.

reach the families moving into the area.

37Community and Parent Involvement
- Our first Grandparents Day was a great success.
- Over 100 grandparents attended Mass, enjoyed a
breakfast in the Forum and visited their
grandchildren in the classrooms. - We dedicated our newly renovated gym.
- We held a meeting with 5th grade parents to help
make a successful transition to middle school. - We started a Sunshine Committee to help school
families in a time of need (i.e. meals, carpool,
etc.) - We held our annual Auction at South Fork Ranch
and raised over 45,000 for our science lab,
Saxon Phonics and Financial Aid programs.

- Fridays in the Forum continued to be a place for
parents to gather each Friday. - Our 2nd Annual PTO Tailgate party was a huge
success. - Over 700 students and their families attended our
Back-to-School picnic to kick-off our new school
year. - Dads Club continued to be a huge asset to our
school and parish community with its Sweat Equity
work days and community-building fundraisers. - Our Christmas Store continued to be a wonderful
avenue for our students to purchase gifts for
their loved ones and to realize the true joy of
giving at Christmas.

- Change focus of the PTO (Parent Teacher
Organization) to be more educational in nature
and to host information-based meetings. - Continued support of the Booster Club, Dads
Club, Christmas Store, PTO, Back-to-School
picnic, Tailgate Party and the parish carnival. - Further develop the Sunshine Committee.
- Encourage communication from parents through the
Concerns Corner on the Website. - Hold meetings with parents of each grade level
with a pre-published agenda.
