What is Wireless Web
  • The concept is very simple allow people to
access the Internet from cellular phones,
handheld computers and other portable gadgets.
  • All internet applications are accessible.
  • The technology used is WAP, HDML, WML, Bluetooth,
    Java and others.

In today's busy world, many people delight in the
ability to use new technologies any where at any
time. More and more people are using the Internet
through wireless browsers
3
WAP
  • WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol.
  • The idea comes from the wireless industry, from
companies such as Phone.com, Nokia and Ericsson.
The point of this standard is to serve internet
contents and internet services to wireless
clients, Wap devices, such as mobile phones and
    terminals.

4
WML
  • WML stands for Wireless Markup Language, and is
what HTML is to a web browser. It is based on
XML, or rather it is an XML application. If
youre going from HTML to WML, with no prior
knowledge of XML, chances are youll find WML
very strict. Just like HTML and XML, WML is
read and interpreted by a browser built into the
    WAP device.

5
HTML vs HDML
  • HTML sites are viewed from your desktop and
contain color and graphics. In order to
    accommodate wireless requirements, HDML (Handheld
Device Markup Language) was created to view some
of your same favorite web sites in a text only
    format on a handheld device.

Why Go Wireless
  • The internet has been the subject of discussion
for common a person then anything else since its
introduction. The new economy offers many new
ways of distinguishing and ability to move
forward in the fast-paced B2B (Business to
Business) market. The competition is getting
tougher as the marketing machines gear up for the
latest and greatest techno marvel, the Wireless
Web. Wereless web isnt the new concept but for a
common person its really hard to understand
sometimes. We are not over understanding the
difference between a PC and a Mac but
introduction of new and latest technology
confuses us even more. My purpose here is to
introduce you to this new technology with an
    example provider , Sprint PCS.

What is 3G
  • 3G is Third Generation Wireless
  • The First generation was analog
  • The Second generation was digital (CDMA, TDMA and
    GSM)
  • The Third generation are expected to provide
    broadband, high-speed data applications both
fixed and mobile. Third Generation (3G) is an
industry term for a collection of international
standards and technologies targeted at increasing
efficiency and improving the performance of
mobile wireless networks. The International Tele
communication Union developed this family of
standards, which is referred to as IMT 2000.

11
What is 3G Cellphone Technology?
  • It is common to hear others talking about the new
3G cell phones, and 3G technology for wireless.
What exactly is it? 3G is a term for a collection
of standards and technologies which will be used
in the near future to enhance performance,
particularly on 3g cell phone networks and
increase data speed. A 3G cell phone would be
compatible with any of the languages or standards
which support enhanced data speeds. One such
    standard is CDMA 2000 1X.
  • 3G is an International Telecommunication Union
specification for the third generation (1G was
analog cellular, 2G was digital PCS) of mobile
    communications technology. 3G wireless promises
increased bandwidth of up to 384 Kbps when a
device is stationary or moving at pedestrian
speed, 128 Kbps in a car, and 2 Mbps in fixed
applications. 3G will work over wireless air
interfaces such as WCDMA, GSM(GPRS), and TDMA.
The new EDGE (for Enhanced Data for GSM
Environment air interface has been developed
specifically to meet the bandwidth needs of 3G
cell phones. Some argue true 3G cell phones and
3g networks will not be in place for a long time,
years in fact. Others say 3G cell phones are here
    or coming this season.

12
  • With 3g cell phones, you will eventually enjoy
new features such as enhanced email, instant
messaging and faster web browsing with wireless
web with greater speed and efficiency. as the
technologies become available to you, you will
also be able to to make purchases, manage
financial information, do on line banking and
electronic fund transfers, view video clips and
even play on line games with 3G cell phones.
    Cool!
  • When 3G technology becomes available, you will
will still be able to use your cell phone from
today to make and receive calls. Should you
choose to take full advantage of all of the 3G
features, you will need to have a 3G voice and
data compatible cell phone. 3G technology will
become fully available sometime between now and
2004. Fully 3G compatible 3G cell phones are
available to the consumer now through Sprint and
    Verizon.

13
Sprint PCS
  • In order for best understand the Sprint Wireless
Web, we have to first understand what exactly is
Sprint PCS and what kind of system are they
    using.
  • Sprint is a global communication company serving
26 million business and residential customers in
more than 70 countries. With approximately 75,000
employees world wide and 26Billion in annual
    revenues.
  • Sprint PCS operates the largest all-digital
wireless network in the United States
  • Sprint offers the largest selection of
    Internet-ready phones.
  • Sprint uses Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)

14
Why CDMA
  • Leading 3G standards are based on CDMA
technology. (However, other standards are based
on FDMA/TDMA and TDMA-SC.) Sprint has adopted the
    CDMA-based 3G standard known as CDMA2000. Another
CDMA- based 3G standard is WCDMA, or wideband
    CDMA.
  • Some GSM and TDMA carriers will be adapting their
networks to function using WCDMA for 3G
applications. The cost of adopting WCDMA is
considerably greater for other carriers than that
of CDMA2000 for Sprint. 3G offers greater data
speeds and increased network capacity for both
voice and data. 3G operates on a packet-based
network to transmit data, as opposed to todays
    circuit-switched networks.

15

Sierra 510 AirCard Wireless Web Modem
  • The AirCard 510 is the first Type II compatible
CDMA PC Card modem. This means it fits many
existing laptops and mobile devices currently in
use. It is simple to install, use, and comes with
all the necessary software, and connects a user's
laptop or PDA to the corporate intranet, e-mail,
incoming SMS or short message service.

23
  • This wireless modem kit uses its own phone
number, leaving your cellphone for voice calls.
It is a compatibleType II PC Card design
    incorporating a patented, internally stored
antenna for easy handling, rapid deployment and
connection for your Laptop with a type II
external port. Wireless Modem Kit includes an
AirCard 510 modem, one CD-ROM which contains the
Watcher program, a quick reference guide, a user
guide, and user documentation materials. It also
    contains the Bluekite Compression software
enabling your to cruise the web at up to 5 times
    your modem speed.
  • What is a type II external port? That's where
mobile workers can plug in their external CD-ROM,
or 2 1/2 inch drive. It is a widely used standard
port, and there are adapters and all sorts of
cables and devices which can be plugged into it.
It is the port which looks almost like it could
accept a 2 1/2 inch disk, with a stretch of the
    imagination.

24
  • The software for this modem is very easy to
install. An Installation Wizard will walk you
thru all phases of installation, to get you up
and running. You will want to have the User Guide
handy for any questions you may have along the
way, and if there is a particular URL or address
at a corporate intranet, you will want to have
that address handy, so you can enter it into
Preferences. Preferences can easily be adjusted
in the future at Start menu. You will be able to
monitor signal strength during use, and control
settings and connections. If you need Dial-Up
Networking DUN sessions, use the connections
manager to set the appropriate changes. Dial-Up
Networking is covered in the users manual, and
this device is compatible with other DUN type
    devices.
  • The antenna hides nicely within the modem for
protection, and can easily be replaced if broken.
Contact your friendly Sprint Business Sales
    Associate, for information regarding parts
availability. Power boosters do not seem to have
any effect on signal strength, or are
incompatible. This wireless modem uses the 1900
    MegaHertz band.

25
  • The data rate is 14.4 kps, or kilobytes per
second. It can be compressed with special v.42bis
software provided by Sprint or other sources.
E-mail me if you need the current address or URL
    for compression software. Compression software
enhances your laptop effective modem speed
potential to 56 kilobits per second. Faster
modems should be released before May of 2002. The
modem is compatible with standard RAS type
modem-pools, and corporate servers. Use of this
wireless modem seems to subtract approximately
one tenth of the overall battery longevity per
    cycle.
  • It is an easy matter to allow for receiving and
sending faxes. The mobile worker can simply check
off in Preferences, that the laptop will be used
for sending and/or receiving faxes. The modem can
then answer or send calls in fax format.
  • There are 2 COM ports. There is a serial port,
and the modem port. The serial port is good for
items like monitoring status, signal strength or
receiving Short Messaging Services or SMS
messages. The other COM port is for sending and
receiving data in CDMA format, like web pages, or
    applications from your corporate intranet.

26
