What is Health?
  • The combination of your Physical,
    Mental/Emotional, and Social well-being.

The 3 Elements of Your Health
  • Physical Health the way the parts and systems of
    your body work together.
  • Being able to cope with normal everyday stress.
  • Having strength and energy to pursue physical,
    mental, emotional and social challenges and
    changes.
  • Proper nutrition
  • Regular physical activity
  • Enough rest and sleep

Mental and Emotional Health
  • Mental and Emotional includes your feelings
    about yourself, how well you relate to others and
    how well you meet the demands of daily life.
  • Characteristics of a person with good mental
    health
  • Enjoy learning
  • See mistakes as opportunities to grow, and change
  • Accept responsibility for their actions and stand
    up for their beliefs and values

A person with good Mental Health
  • Is in touch with his or her feelings and
    expresses them in appropriate healthful ways.
  • This person can deal with lifes frustrations
    without feeling overwhelmed.

Social Health
  • This involves the way you get along with others.
  • The ability to make and keep friends.
  • It means to communicate well and showing respect
    for not only others but yourself as well.

YOUR HEALTH TRIANGLE
  • The three elements of health are interconnected,
    like the sides of a TRIANGLE.
  • When one side receives too much or too little
    attention, the other sides change as well.
  • The whole TRIANGLE can become lopsided and
    unbalanced.
  • To be truly healthy, you need to try to keep all
    three sides of the HEALTH TRIANGLE and your life
    for that matter in balance!

The Health Continuum
  • A person with a balanced life is said to have a
    high degree of Wellness-an overall state of well
    being, or total health.
  • Your health is like a yardstick, there are many
    different points to where your health can be
    located at any given time.
  • From day to day, year to year, you experience
    different levels of total health.

  • Substance abuse is related to an estimated
    120,000 deaths per year.
  • 100,000 caused by alcohol
  • 20,000 caused by drugs
  • Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of
    avoidable death in the US accounting for more
    deaths than AIDS, traffic accidents, suicides,
    homicides, fires and illegal drugs combined
    nearly 400,000 per year.

  • Homicide and Suicide together claim almost 50,000
    lives per year in the U.S.

Promoting your health
  • Millions of people get sick, become disabled or
    die each year because of the decisions they make
    and the way they live.
  • Their decision making skills and personal
    behavior are directly related to their deaths.
  • Many of those deaths could be prevented if people
    practiced a few simple health habits.

Lifestyle Factors
  • These are personal behaviors and habits related
    to the way a person lives, that help determine
    his or her level of health.

Important Lifestyle Factors
  • Get between seven and eight hours of sleep per
    night.
  • Eat nutritious foods from the various food groups
    each day.
  • Refrain from smoking and using tobacco products.
  • Eat breakfast daily.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Do not use alcohol or other drugs.
  • Maintain recommended weight.

How does your attitude affect your HEALTH?
  • Studies have shown that OPTOMISTS, people that
    tend to see the positive in situations, are less
    likely to suffer illness and die younger than
    PESSIMISTS.

Prevention
  • Practicing healthy habits to keep a person well
    and free from disease and other ailments.
  • Examples are
  • Wearing Seat Belts
  • Applying Sunscreen
  • Avoiding Unsafe Areas
  • Using Protective Gear When Playing Sports

Health Education
  • Providing of accurate health information in such
    a way as to influence people to change attitudes
    so that they take positive actions about their
    health.
  • Health Educations Goal to help people live
    long, zestful, and productive lives.
  • It gives students tools needed to help them long,
    productive lives.

Health Literate
  • Health Literacy describes an individuals
    capacity to obtain, interpret, and understand
    basic health information and services and use
    such information and services in ways to promote
    his or her health and wellness.
