Team Roles
The four Styles identified in the previous
exercise translate into important roles. Those
roles can be described as follows
VisionaryFocuses primarily on the big picture.
He or she looks at long-term, desired outcomes
and the general direction of the team and its
processes. As such, the Visionary can provide a
much-needed sense of mission, direction and
leadership that others cannot. On the down side,
the Visionary often ignores the details and
fails to do what is necessary to get things
done. AchieverThe person who can most be
counted on to accomplish tasks. He or she is
often a diligent worker with an outstanding level
of technical expertise and can be counted on to
complete any task to which he or she is assigned.
However, in his or her desire to get things done,
the Achiever often overlooks the contributions of
others and may be seen as difficult to work
with. FacilitatorBy far the best at working
with people. In doing so, he or she tries
to ensure that processes are established and
upheld. When conflicts arise, the Facilitator can
be counted upon to step in and make things right
by getting all the parties to appropriately
discuss their differences. This can also be a
negative, because, in his or her attention to
process, the Facilitator often neglects to
complete tasks on time. AnalyzerThe
conscience of the team. He or she reviews the
teams decisions and approaches and compares them
to the common purpose to make sure the team
stays on track. As such, he or she can often
provide the ethical and procedural compass
that teams require. However, in doing so, the
Analyzer often remains in the reactive mode and
is often not seen as a self-starter or as someone
who can perform a task alone.

Working Together
Instructions The following grid presents brief
descriptions of how different Styles can
work together. Select your tendency on the left
and read across how you can best work with other
roles in a coaching situation.

Visionary Achiever
Facilitator Analyzer
Keep in mind that as Visionaries, you are both
looking toward tomorrow, but you have to work
with others to get things done Seek out the
visionarys counsel to ensure that your tasks are
making a difference in terms of the big
picture Remind the Visionary of the process
required to get the long term results. Allow his
or her vision to mold the processes your
use Help the Visionary to see that the
long-term goals and the common purposes are
interrelated.
Try to translate your vision of the future into
things the Achiever can accomplish, and the tasks
required. Divide tasks clearly with other
Achievers to ensure the best results. Value the
Achievers contributions to accomplishing the
common purpose and suggest processes to help him
or her work with others on the team. Allow
the achiever to take the lead on time-sensitive
tasks while supporting him or her with advice and
guidance.
Combine your inspiration with the Facilitators
people skills to establish a process that
combines your vision and the common
purpose. Ask the facilitator for ways the
process can support the tasks. Try to adapt some
of his or her people skills to your own
style Work together to establish processes that
consider the needs of all the members of your
team Once the facilitator has established a
process, work within that process to achieve the
common purpose.
Empower the Analyzer to examine the tasks and
processes to ensure that they are in keeping with
the vision and common purpose. Encourage the
Analyzer to review your work to help you improve
and ensure that your efforts support the common
purpose. Ask the Analyzer about the extent to
which the teams processes are supporting the
common purpose Work with other Analyzers to
keep your comments positive and supportive and to
encourage team unity.
