  • Limited resources, ethnic differences, and weak
    governments cause conflict
  • Civil War (battles among citizens within a
    country) often occurs

  • Kenya
  • 1963 Kenya was declared independent from England
  • Now it is a republic with a president
  • Until 1991 it only had one political party
  • 1992 they held elections for President with more
    than one candidate running for office

  • Presidents serve a 5 year term with a two term
    limit he also appoints a cabinet of ministers and
    a VP
  • Their legislature is called the Bunge and the
    President must approve laws they create
  • Citizens 18 and older can vote

  • Their constitution was ratified in 1996
  • Power is split between the executive and
    legislative branches

  • President has a 5 years term and appoints a

    made up of two parties - the National Congress
    Party (NCP) and Sudan People's Liberation
    Movement (SPLM) in 2005.
  • Mainly governed by Islamic law
  • All power is invested in the President even
    though they have 3 branches of government

  • Many feel that elections are corrupt and often
    rigged by the ruling party
  • In the last major election the NCP party won an
    overwhelming 80 of the vote even though many
    opposed their rule. The outcome of the election
    made many feel that they were right in believing
    that the government is corrupt
