Title: Basic Periodic Table

1
Basic Periodic Table
2
Atomic Number
  • The atomic number is always the smaller number on
    the elements box.
  • The atomic number always equals the number of
    protons or electrons.
  • For the element to the right, what would the
    atomic number be?

3
Symbol
  • The symbol in an elements box is always a letter
    or two
  • The symbol will either have one capital letter,
or one capital letter and one lowercase letter
  • Which is the symbol here? ?

4
Name
  • In an elements box, there will always be a name
  • The name is always what the element is called
  • Whats the name here? ?

5
Mass Number
  • The mass number equals the number of protons plus
    neutrons
  • The mass number is the bottom number of an
elements box, and will always be the bigger
    number
  • Whats the mass number here? ?

6
Calculating Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
  • The atomic number is the number of protons in an
    atom of an element
  • To find the number of electrons in an element,
you just look at the protons. The number of
protons and electrons will always be the same or
    congruent
  • Congruent means equal!
  • To find the number of neutrons in an element, you
subtract the atomic number from the mass number.
If the mass number or the atomic number is a
decimal, you will round to the nearest whole
    number

7
Example
  • 8, is the atomic number and 16 is the mass number
  • The number of protons and electrons would be 8
  • The mass number would be 8 too, because if you
subtract 8 from 16 you still get 8!

Quiz!
  • 1.The atomic number equals
  • A protons and electrons
  • B protons and neutrons
  • C blue and yellow
  • 2.The mass number equals
  • A protons and electrons
  • B protons and neutrons
  • C cats and dogs
  • 3.To find the number of neutrons you..
  • A add monkeys and bananas
  • B subtract the atomic number from the mass
    number
  • C add the atomic number to the mass number
  • 4.The symbol is..
  • A is the elements name
  • B the atomic number
  • C is the letter or two in an atom, and the first
letter is always the capital letter if there are
    two letters
  • 5.The elements name is..
  • A is the symbol
  • B is the atomic number
