Warm-up class activity
  • Instructions
  • Students get into groups of three or four to play
    an interesting game.
  • This game consists of 5 riddles which require
students to think wisely and logically in order
    to get the correct answer.

4
  • Rules
  • Students in the same group think of the answer
together and one student will raise his hand to
be allowed to answer in front of the other
    groups.
  • The group which raises its hand first will have
the priority to give the answer first.
  • If that group does not have a correct answer, the
other groups will have the chance to answer the
    question again.

5
  • Each question only receives 2 possible answers.
  • If the first group gets the correct answer, it
will score 100 points for each question.
  • If the first group fails to get the right answer
and the second group can answer the question
correctly, the second group will score 50 points
    for that question.
  • After that, the game will moves on with the next
    question.

6
  • The game will stop when all the 6 riddles are
given feedback from the teacher and which group
has the highest score will be the winner and
    receive a beautiful gift.
  • The most important thing is that each group when
giving the answer has to use one of the patterns
    below
  • We think that
  • We feel that
  • In our opinion
  • In our view

RIDDLE 1
  • If you were standing directly on Antarctica's
South Pole facing north, which direction would
you travel if you took one step backward?
  • Answer

RIDDLE 2
  • There is a word in the English language in

first three signify a woman, the first four
signify a great man, and the whole word
represents a great woman. What is the word?
  • Answer
  • Heroine.

I'll approach like a breeze, but can come like a
gale. By some I get hit, but all have shown fear.
I'll dance to the music, though I can't hear. Of
names I have many, of names I have one. I'm as
slow as a snail, but from me you can't run. What
    am I?
  • Answer
  • I am a shadow.

12
CONCLUSION OF THE ACTIVITY
  • What the students have just done has a particular
purpose. That is to take the first step to
approach the way of expressing opinions, ideas,
points of view subjectively. It is rather
different from the way to say a fact.
  • So what is an opinion and what is a fact?
  • And how do they differ from each other?
