LP DAAC Historical and Functional Perspective
  • NASAs Earth Observing System EOS is comprised of
    three main parts...
  • Space Measurement System
  • EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS)
  • Scientific Research Program
  • The LP DAAC is one of eight NASA DAACs that are
    key components of the EOSDIS.
  • The primary functions of the DAACs are to
process, archive, and distribute EOS data and
products. DAACs also have important user
    support responsibilities.
  • The EOS Data Gateway (EDG) is the principal tool
for users to access EOS data and products.

LP DAAC Role with ASTER Data and Products
  • Receive (via tape) L1A L1B data from Japan, and
then ingest and archive those data.
  • Distribute L1A L1B data to users who order via
    the EDG.
  • On demand (i.e., when ordered by a user), produce
and distribute (via ftp) higher-level ASTER
standard data products. The ASTER DEM is
archived and can be ordered via the EDG.
  • Support users of ASTER data and products.
  • Other Responsibilities
  • Host and operate the ASTER Expedited Data System.
  • Host and support the ASTER Data Acquisition
    Request (DAR) Tool.
  • Supplementary L1B data and L1B browse production.

Policy Considerations/Changes L1B Production
  • Producing L1B data is not a primary role of the
    LP DAAC.
  • However, the original L1B production strategy
defined by the U.S. and Japan resulted in fewer
L1B data sets being produced from L1A data than
many users hoped would be available.
  • Consequently, the LP DAAC recently implemented a
system for supplementary production of L1B data.
    The DAAC will -
  • generate L1Bs from L1As acquired prior to
    February 1, 2002.
  • generate L1Bs only from L1As for which no
    GDS-produced L1B exists.
  • At the same time, the DAAC implemented a
capability to generate a higher-resolution browse
image for L1B data. Eventually, all L1B data
available from the LP DAAC will have associated
    700 x 830 pixel browse images.

Policy Considerations/Changes - Pricing
  • Prior to August 2002, all ASTER data products
were available from the LP DAAC to all users
    without charge.
  • Certain factors necessitated a change in that
    policy. Currently
  • most users pay 55 per scene for L1A L1B data
    and decor. products.
  • a 5/per order shipping fee also is applied to
    hard media orders.
  • NASA and affiliated users, as well as
educational users, receive all ASTER data and
    products at no charge.
  • The DAACs data pool also contains ASTER data
over the United States and territories that are
    free to all users.
  • The charging policy resulted in a dramatic drop
in the number of ASTER data granules ordered from
the DAAC. In general, only about 5 to 15 of
L1A L1B data distributed by the DAAC are
    purchased by customers.
