Title: How to tell the difference
1Physical/ChemicalProperties and Changes
- How to tell the difference
2Physical property
- Any characteristic of a material that can be
observed or measured without changing the
identity of the material
3Examples of Physical Properties..
- Size
- Shape
- Color
- Density
- Texture
- Smell
- State of matter
4 Density
- The amount of mass a material has for a given
volume is DENSITY. -
- Density mass/volume
5Same Volume, Different Mass
- A bowling ball and a volleyball have the same
volume (they take up the same space), but the
bowling ball is more dense than the volleyball.
6Chemical Property..
- Any characteristic that gives a substance the
ability to undergo a change that results in a new
substance. - Only observable during a chemical reaction.
7Examples of Chemical Properties..
- Flammability- the ability to burn
- Reactivity- how easily it reacts with another
substance to form something new.
8Physical property
- Substance may seem different, but atoms link up
in the same way.
9States of Matter
10Physical Change..
11Its a physical change if
- It changes shape or size
- It dissolves.
12Its a physical change if...
- It changes phase (freezes, boils, evaporates,
condenses)
13Chemical Change
- Changes the identity of the substance
- Makes new substances
Also know as a chemical reaction
14Here are some other examples of chemical
reactions
- raw egg becomes cooked egg
- cake mix becomes cake
15Its a chemical change if.
- It burns
- Temperature changes without heating/cooling
16Its a chemical change if...
17Its a chemical change if...
- It changes color- not all
- It forms a precipitate
18Always a chemical change if..
- Burning
- Bubbling
- Rotting
- Rusting
- Think BBRR..
19What kind of change is it if someone...
- Tears up paper?
- Physical change
- Mixes salt and water?
- Physical change
20What kind of change is it if someone...
- Burns paper?
- Chemical change
- Evaporates salt water?
- Physical change
21What kind of change is it if someone...
- Mixes vinegar and baking soda?
- Chemical change
