Current day Mexico and South America. Why do we
call it current day when referring to the age of
Spanish exploration?

- Who lived in Mexico when Spanish Explorers
arrived?

9Hernando Cortez
Hernando Cortez defeated the Aztec king
Motecuhzoma in 1521.

10The Fall of the Aztecs
- The Aztecs thought the Spanish explorers were
gods coming to help them, so they trusted Cortez
and his men. However, many died do to the
Spanishs advanced weapons and the European
diseases they brought to the Americas.
11The Aftermath
After Cortez conquered the Aztecs, he claimed the
land for Spain and built Mexico city on the ashes
of what use to be the Aztec Empire.

Pizarro conquered Atahuallpa and the Inca Empire
fell in 1533. How did civil war play a part in
the fall?
