El Templo de la Sagrada Familia
  • By Aubrey French

2
Background Information
  • Antonio Gaudi y Coinet designed the Cathedral
  • He started constructing the Cathedral in 1883 and
    is still under construction today
  • The Cathedral is Neo- Gothic
  • The towers of it resemble trees and vines
  • El Templo de la Sagrada Familia is located in
    Barcelona, Spain

3
History
  • Often simply called the Sagrada Familia, is a
    massive, privately-funded Roman Catholic church
  • The construction of the Cathedral started in 1883
and isnt expected to be finished until 2026
  • The project was started by the diocesan architect
Francisco de Paula del Villar (1828-1901). At the
end of 1883 Gaudi was commissioned to carry on
    the works

4
Antonio Gaudi
  • The El Templo de la Sagrada Familia is Antonios
best work that he has ever done
  • He started his work on this temple in 1883 and
    died in 1926
  • In all those fields he developed a highly
expressive language of his own and created a body
of work that speaks directly to the senses.
  • He was born in Baix Camp but it was in Barcelona
that he studied, worked and lived with his family
  • He devoted his whole life to the El Templo de la
    Sagrada Familia

5
Symbology
  • Christian symbology is to be found in all Gaudi's
work. The most evident example of its application
is the church, which tells the life of Jesus and
    the history of the faith
  • The towers of the temple resemble trees and vines
  • Jesus and the faithful, represented by Mary, the
apostles and the saints. That can be seen in the
eighteen bell towers, which symbolize Jesus, the
Virgin, the four evangelists and the twelve
    apostles
  • On the three facades, which represent the human
life of Jesus (from birth to death), and in the
interior, which suggests the celestial Jerusalem,
where a set of columns, dedicated to Christian
cities and continents, represent the apostles.

6
Construction of the crypts and facades
  • These are the oldest parts of the church, and
coincide with the time of Gaudi and his followers
  • They built the exterior and interior facades with
stone and with masonry or reinforced concrete
    inside the intermediate space.
  • The pinnacles are made of reinforced concrete
    coated with Venetian glass.

7
Construction of the columns and knots
  • In the construction of columns, knots and
capitals, the structural element is mainly the
    reinforced concrete of the interior.
  • The stone, a quality finish, serves as a
recipient or shuttering for the concrete during
the construction, as well as helping with the
    resistant function of the column.
  • The columns have all been made of natural
stone.. Once they are on site, the building
system used has been the same as for the main
    columns.

8
Tourism
  • 2.26 million people visited the partially built
church in 2004, making it one of the most popular
    attractions in Spain.
  • Free and guided tours of El Temple de la Sagrada
Familia are available to visitors throughout the
    church
  • Also after the tour of the temple tourists can
visit the museum located inside the temple and
    see all Gaudis masterpieces.

9
Costs
  • Construction on Sagrada Familia is not supported
by any government or official church sources.
  • Private patrons funded the initial stages.
  • Money from tickets purchased by tourists is now
used to pay for the work, and private donations
are accepted through the Friends of the Temple.
  • The construction budget for 2009 is 18 million.

10
Some Work Teams
  • PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT
  • The professional management consists of the
    director architects, the technical director
    architects and the safety coordinators.
  • CONSTRUCTION
  • The Construction Department is in charge of the
    drafting of the construction project.
  • STONEMASONS
  • The stonemasons' workshop is the oldest at the
church, probably from before Gaudi came. Today,
some of the stone pieces are made in the
    workshops of outside associates
  • ELECTRICIANS
  • This team of skilled professionals is
responsible, to mention just a few of the more
    complex element
