A Tough Decision
  • As Abolitionists continued their call to end
slavery Lincoln hesitated due to the constitution
  • Lincoln did not want to upset the slave states
fighting for the north or the Northern Democrats
    and Republicans who opposed emancipation
  • Though he Disliked slavery, Lincoln wanted to
preserve the Union but by the summer of 1862
Lincoln Decided to free southern slaves to weaken
    the south

5
Free at Last, Free At last
  • Abraham Lincoln Issued the Emancipation
Proclamation but Very Few slaves were freed
  • Lincoln could NOT free slaves in the North under
the constitution, but Southern Slaves could be
    freed under a Military action
  • The Northern Slave states would start to free
slaves gradually and the proclamation made the
war about preserving the union and liberation

6
Four Sides to the Story
  • While abolitionists were happy, many thought
    Lincoln should have done more
  • Northern Democrats were against emancipation and
feared the act would make the war longer
  • Union Soldiers supported the act because it would
    weaken the confederacy
  • White Southerners were angry because as slaves
began to run away north the confederacy would be
    weakened

7
The Strongest Fight
  • With the urging of Frederick Douglas, the Union
Army began to welcome African troops to fight
  • By the end of the war over 180,000 African
soldiers would join the Union Cause
  • African Soldiers were often organized into all
black regiments and given the worst jobs but
fought just as hard to preserve their freedom

8
GLORY
  • The 54th Massachusetts Regiment would be one of
the most popular all black regiments
  • They would lead the attack on Fort Wagner without
pay in an act of heroism
  • The soldiers would fight, knowing that if they
were caught they would be killed or returned to
    slavery

9
Drastic Measures
  • As the South grew tired of war, riots and
desertion took a toll on the confederate army
  • While the South Disagreed on how to run the war,
the North saw Copperheads begin to protest for
    peace
  • Lincoln would Have any copperhead arrested and
would suspend the writ of Habeas Corpus to
    preserve Unity

10
With the First pick overall, the Cleveland
Cavaliers select
  • With soldiers needed both sides instituted
conscription for men aged 18-45, but the rich
planters in the south were often exempt
  • In the North, the Union offered 300 Bounty to
join the Army limiting the use of the draft
  • The issues of draft and race led to riots in New
    York seeing 100 people killed

11
Economic Effects
  • NORTH
  • Inflation of Prices
  • Boost in production and Industry
  • Income tax on Earnings
  • A new Union Currency
  • SOUTH
  • Food Shortages
  • 9000 Inflation
  • Selling of Cotton, illegally, to the North

12
Resistance is NOT futile
  • Slaves began to resist slavery through slow work,
    stoppages, and sabotage
  • Slaves would try to overthrow their overseers or
run away to freedom in the North
  • By the end of the war over 500,000 slaves had
    fled to the North

13
Girl Power
  • As the war went on women began to take rolls in
    the farms and factories
  • Women began to serve as nurses in the war or in
    jobs to help the soldiers
  • Women such as Harriet Tubman and Belle Boyd would
work as spies to help their soldiers in the North
    and South

14
Jail Birds
  • War Prisons became some of the worst places a
    soldier could end up
  • The Prison in Elmira New York would lead to the
Death of over 3000 soldiers captured in the war
  • The Prison at Andersonville would become the
worst war prison in the civil war seeing as many
as 100 men per day die
  • Over 50,000 men would die in war camps but the
number dying on the battle field would far
    surpass those in war prisons
