Title: Terminology

1
Terminology
2
Common terms
  • Rehabiliation
  • Process of getting a person back to his or her
normal level of function following an injury or
    illness
  • Modality
  • A therapeutic method or agent, such as surgery,
    chemotherapy, or electrotherapy, that involves
the physical treatment of a disorder.

3
Common terms
  • Anatomy
  • Study of the structure of the body (how the body
    is put together)
  • Physiology
  • Study of the function of the body (how the body
    works)
  • Tendons
  • Fibrous connective tissue around a joint that
    connects muscle to bone
  • Ligaments
  • Fibrous connective tissue that connects bone to
    bone

4
In terms of the body
  • Anatomical position
  • Standing posture with the arms at the side and
the palms of the hands facing forward

5
Planes of the body
  • Frontal/Coronal Plane
  • Separates the body into front and back halves
  • Sagittal Plane
  • Divides the body into left and right halves
  • Transverse Plane
  • Divides the body into top and bottom halves

6
Activity
  • Take a minute and draw (or trace) a human body in
the anatomical position and dissect it into the
    three planes

7
In terms of the body(Directional Terms)
  • Common medical terms of location will help
describe where an injury is located on the
    athletes body
  • Anterior vs Posterior
  • Medial vs Lateral
  • Proximal vs Distal
  • Superior vs Inferior
  • Superficial vs Deep

8
Anterior vs Posterior
  • Anterior/Ventral
  • Refers to the front of the body
  • Athlete was hit at the anterior aspect of the
upper leg. Where was he hit?
  • Posterior/Dorsal
  • Refers to the back of the body
  • Athletes indicates that the posterior side of his
upper leg is painful when running What hurts?
  • Which plane separates these two?
  • Frontal/Coronal plane

9
Medial vs Lateral
  • Medial
  • Toward the midline of the body
  • Injury on the inside of his knee
  • Lateral
  • Away from the midline of the body
  • Injury on the outside of the knee
  • Which plane would separate these two?
  • Sagittal plane

10
Proximal vs Distal
  • Proximal
  • Toward the attachment of a limb to the trunk
  • Distal
  • Away from the attachment of a limb
  • The shoulder is _______ to the elbow
  • The knee is ________ to the hip
  • The hip is _________ to the knee
  • The elbow is ________ to the shoulder

11
Superior vs Inferior
  • Superior
  • One point or structure being higher than another
  • The knee is superior to the ___________
  • Inferior
  • One point, or structure, that is lower than
    another
  • The pelvis is inferior to the ____________

12
Superficial vs Deep
  • Superficial
  • Close to the bodys surface
  • Deep
  • Away from the bodys surface
  • Which injury is worse?
  • A superficial cut or a deep cut?

13
Activity
  • For each of the 5 pairs of directional terms,
make a poster that displays the following
  • Definition of each term
  • Example of each term
  • Drawing of each term

14
Anatomy terms
  • Epiderms
  • Most superficial layer of skin
  • Dermis
  • Layer just below the epidermis. Contains oil
glands, blood vessels, hair follicles, nerves
  • Subcutaneous layer
  • Fatty layer that insulates the body from
temperature changes and connects the skin to the
    body

15
Anatomy terms cont
  • Axial Skeleton
  • The bones of the body that include the spine,
    chest, and head
  • Appendicular skeleton
  • Bones of the extremities shoulders, arms, legs,
    feet, hands, and pelvs

16
Bone terminology
  • Diaphysis
  • The long straight shaft of the long bone
  • Epiphysis
  • Expanded ends of the long bone that is made up of
    two condyloids
