Shoes on the Danube PromenadeBudapest
  • The monument ,a row of about 40 metres long,
consists of 60 pairs of iron shoes, created by
the sculptor Gyula Pauer and his filmmaker
    friend, Can Togay.
  • It is a memorial dedicated to the victims of the
fascist Arrow Cross party members .
  • Not once did the Arrow Cross soldiers break into
the homes of the Jews and forced them to march
along the city in a row. Once arrived to the
Danube, they were standing in a line, facing the
    river and their death.
  • Those who tried to help them shared the same fate
    they were also shot !
  • The victims had to take their shoes off before
they were shot. The iron shoes were placed on the
embankment in 2005, on 16th April. Each pair was
modeled after a contemporary shoe from the
    1940's.

"Men to the left! Women to the right! "Eight
words spoken quietly, indifferently, without
emotion. Eight short, simple words. Yet that was
the moment when I parted from my mother. Elie
Wiesel

"Never shall I forget that night, the first night
in camp, which has turned my life into one long
night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed.
Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I
forget the little faces of the children, whose
bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath
a silent blue sky.
20

Never shall I forget those flames which
consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget
that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all
eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I
forget those moments which murdered my God and my
soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I
forget these things, even if I am condemned to
live as long as God Himself. Never. Elie
Wiesel

  • To forget the dead would be akin to killing them
    a second time. Elie Wiesel

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said
"Denying historical facts, especially on such an
important subject as the Holocaust, is just not
acceptable. Nor is it acceptable to call for the
elimination of any State or people. I would like
to see this fundamental principle respected both
in rhetoric and in practice by all the members of
the international community.
  • They ( the deniers of the Holocaust )
  • are committing the greatest indignity
human beings can inflict on one another telling
people who have suffered excruciating pain and
loss that their pain and loss were illusions.
  • Elie Wiesel

Bread, soup - these were my whole life. I was a
body. Perhaps less than that even a starved
stomach. The stomach alone was aware of the
passage of time. Elie Wiesel
24
  • For your benefit, learn from our tragedy. It is
not a written law that the next victims must be
    Jews. Simon Wiesenthal
