    sickness, disease, and death along the journey

    to start a new life

    farm lands similar to Germany
  • Germans would also try to set up communities in
    Texas but would have to survive poor harvests
  • German Artisans also came to America to find
    prosperity, including John Bausch and Henry
    Laumb, who became very wealthy

    trees, Gymnasiums, Kindergartens, Hamburgers, and
    the Frankfurter

    America as Salesmen in Mining Towns or Store
    owners in Big Cities
  • Alexander Rothschild would open up a small
    grocery store in Connecticut and turn his profits
    into a popular Hotel Chain

Irish Springs in America
  • Irish Settlers came to America to escape poverty,
    persecution, and to find land and freedom
  • After the Potato Famine Hit Ireland, over 2
    million people would leave the homeland to avoid
    death and starvation
  • With little Money Irish settlers stayed in Port
    Towns making up 1/4th of many big city
    populations
  • Many Irish settlers were uneducated and took the
    hardest jobs, like building railroads, washing,
    or working as servants
  • The Irish would compete with free blacks for the
    low paying jobs that nobody else wanted

  • As Americans and Immigrants flocked to the
    cities, they would soon face overcrowding
  • Housing shortages led greedy landlords to pack
    people into small apartments leading to disease
    and crime
  • Big Cities lacked proper police, fire, and sewer
    support for their growing populations
  • As Immigrants came to the cities politicians
    would start to assist them in settling, in
    exchange for their vote

  • As Immigration increased, prejudices began to put
    immigrants in danger
  • Nativists looked to protect Americas Native Born
    Citizens and formed groups to discriminate
    against all immigrants forming the Know Nothing
    Party
  • The Know Nothing Party formed to ban Catholics
    and immigrants from holding office, a 21 year
    waiting period to become a citizen, and a cut in
    Immigration
  • The Party would elect 6 governors but
    disagreements on slavery would lead to the end of
    the party

  • As Americans try to become more knowledgeable
    Noah Webster creates an American Only Dictionary
  • Transcendentalism, founded by Emerson and
    Thoreau, teaches people that the spiritual world
    is more important than the physical world
  • Thoreau would also preach Civil Disobedience to
    protest peacefully over issues
