Imperialism

• The economic and political domination of a strong
  nation over the other weaker nations.
• Many European Nations had very Imperialistic View.

Protectorate

• An area of land, or a colony which is not part of
  a country.
• They allow another country to protect them, but
  in exchange they take advice and run their colony
  the way the Imperial Country wants them to.

Anglo-Saxonism

• Similar to Manifest Destiny
• People felt that it was the United States job to
  expand overseas and spread its civilization to
  other people.

Expansion in the Pacific

• The United States began sending ships westward
  into the Pacific Ocean.
• Dozens of ships a year were traveling to China to
  trade goods.

Trade with Japan

• The United States also wanted to trade with
  Japan, but the rulers of Japan did not want to
  trade with us.
• Matthew C. Perry was put in charge of taking
  several steam ships to Japan and to negotiate a
  treaty with them to begin trade.
• Was he successful?

Annexing Hawaii

• As Trade with China and Japan increased, many
  Americans became interested in the Island of
  Hawaii.

Pan-Americanism

• The idea that the United States and Latin
  American nations should work together.

Building a modern navy

• Many people in the United States in the late
  1800s thought our Navy needed to be more
  modern.
• We already had a navy, so what did they mean by a
  modern navy?
