Robert Hooke (1663)

• One of the first people to observe cells
• Used a compound microscope he had built.
• Observed cork
• Cells looked like small rectangular rooms called

Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1683)

• Made his own lenses
• Used simple microscopes
• Observed pond water, named creatures animalcules
