6th grade Warm Up 8/31/11
  • Matter is anything that has volume and mass.
  • Define the following properties and identify
how they are measured, what tool is used to make
the measurement and the unit of measure. Remember
we use the metric system in science.
  • Ex. Temperature a measure of how hot or cold
something is specifically the measure of the
average kinetic energy of the particles of matter
in an object. The tool used to make the
measurement is a thermometer, and the unit of
    measure is degrees Celsius. (C)
  • Now you define
  • Volume
  • Mass
  • Weight.

2
  • Volume is the measure of the amount of space that
something occupies. We use a graduated cylinder
to measure liquid volume, a ruler to measure
    solid volume L X W X H and to measure irregular
solids we use water displacement method the unit
    is cm³ and mL.
  • 2. Mass is the amount of matter in a give
object. We use a triple beam balance to measure
mass, the unit of measure is the gram (g) or
    kilogram (kg)
  • Weight is the measure of the gravitational force
exerted on an object. We use a scale/spring scale
to measure weight. The unit of measure is the
    Newton (N)
