1Observation Inference
2Observations
- Any information collected with the senses.
- The skill of describing scientific events.
3Inference
- Conclusions or deductions based on observations .
- The process of drawing a conclusion from given
evidence.
4Tracks like these are common in parts of New
England and in the southwestern United States.
What do you OBSERVE? What can you INFER?
5Now what do you think?
6Infer what happened based on your observations.
7As you now know, one of the most important skills
in science is that of OBSERVATION. Most of the
time we think of observation as something we do
with our eyes, when we see something, we observe
it. However, all 5 of our senses can be used to
make observations.
8We can use those senses to make two kinds of
observations those that are facts and those that
are opinions. Facts are those things that are
true for everybody. Opinions are beliefs based on
personal preference.
9Safety First Observation Lab
- For the next observation lab, you will need to
use all 5 of your senses touch, hearing, sight,
smell, and taste. Yes- we do get to taste it this
time! You will also need to be able to
differentiate between what is a fact about your
observations and what is an opinion about your
observations so be detailed in your descriptions
that you write in your journal!
